jjbrr
S can't pass 2♥ S can't double 5♥ Oh, are you asking about getting to grand? W could start with 2♠, but I don't think getting to grand is automatic on this hand. Also, whoever only made 5♥, I blame them too. This hand was a comedy of errors. Edit: and actually if I'm reading the post correctly, west doubled 5♥, not south. So I blame NS for not calling the director.
lmilne
What would a 5♦ bid instead of a 5♥ bid mean? I'm thinking more in the terms of the auction (1♠)-2♥-(P)-2♠-(4♠), don't like 4♥. edit: lol south, good work
Phil
LOL? If I were EW I would LOVE to buy it at 5♥ - and doubled no less! 5♠ is cold and even 7♠ is cheaper than the 850 we just got. Sorry, but most elements of this auction belong in the B/I. So I'll assume you put it in the wrong section. 1♠, 2♥ and 4♠ are fine. I agree with those calls, but others might nit-pick 2♥ and bid 2♠ instead. South has a great hand for spades. 2, 3 and even 4♠ would get support. With a 6-4, I like 4. West cannot bid 4♥ with potentially the best hand at the table! 2♠ looks right to me as both the diamonds and the hearts are weak for a 4♦ fit jump. As East, if pard made a cue bid, I have an easy 5♦ call over 4♠. South needs to come alive at some point, and 5♠ looks warranted. West has a slam bid and North takes the push to 6♠. In fairness, I don't know if either E or W can take the push to 7 and potentially trade a plus for a minus. There's poker involved, especially at teams, and its possible North is taking the push to 7♠ as insurance.

jdonn
1♠ 2♥ P 4♥ 4♠ 5♥ P P DBL Bold and Italics = LOL Oh auction has been changed. The biggest blame for 5♠X lies with west who bid 4♥ instead of cuebidding or doing something else to show a strong raise.

After all why give partner information that can help him make a rational decision when we can feed him mushroom fertilizer instead. BTW is your night vision improving?
