Pass seems like the safest plus, but we could easily be cold for 4♥ or even 6♥ and it is r/w. So I'd have sympathy for 4♥, which I'd definitely consider, and even 6♥ isn't the worst abomination I've ever heard (but it is pretty crazy). Other things like 3nt might also be pretty crazy but work sometimes.

 

I'm curious, what was the abomination?

4H for me. Awfully nice hearts, poor diamond spots, AND the wrong vulnerability to be a hero and pass.

 

I wouldn't call pass an abomination, just not the best choice. Most anything else I think is worthy of the name.

2H is infinitely better than pass to me. Also it seems like a safer plus (lol), and does not risk something stupid like going -280 cold for 4H.

 

Actually any bid on this hand is infinitely better than pass to me. Passing is just a complete joke.

Of the apparent choices; pass, 2♥, 3♥, maybe 3♦. I like pass the least. I would actually consider the Hamman bid since I have a ♦ stopper and 7 tricks in ♥ assuming an entry, or 4♥.

I said pass cause OP had written 2♥ instead of 2♦. I think I'd go for 4♥. Pass by partner and RHO seem weird, though, so something else might be right.

I'd rather bid 3H than 4H. First of all if partner can't bid game over this I really doubt we are taking 10 tricks (really likely it's not even 9). Second partner is going to try for slam with 4225 or 4216 and a pretty good hand, both of which are really bad for us.

I think I'd rather bid 2♥ than 3♥. What, after all, am I going to do with all my losing diamonds?

If we are so weak that partner can't bid 4H over 3H (which shows a strong hand), or that we have nowhere to pitch our hearts, maybe the opponents can make something.

 

But yeah 2H seems better than 3H if you're not gonna bid 4.

Yeah, that was silly of me. I was mentally comparing 4♥ to 2♦X and I think it more likely that our raw score for 2♦X is greater positive than that our raw score for 4♥ is positive. But 2♥ is clearly a much "safer plus" and safer plus isn't the main metric for the bid as obviously passing on a 1430 or 620 to score a 100 or 300 is not going to be great.

 

I was more curious about what was the "abomination" than I was about what is the right bid. :)

The abomination was 3NT! They were not very happy because this was a teaching hand and the play problem was in 4♥ :P (3NT was cold on this layout but I am definitely not trying to justify the bid, I do realise it was a little bit crazy)

4H could easily fail but it could also easily make. I doubt any other game offers as good a chance. The bidding may not end, there are a lot of unaccounted black cards that have yet to speak. 4H just expresses your hopes and does not prevent partner from bidding more. 3D would set a force that wants to explore. To the 3N people, no this is not time for unusual NT.

 

To consider passing is really in the same group as the unusual NT. Look at your hand, you have 7 playing tricks in H, your partner has short D you need only produce 3 tricks to make game. Defensively against D you have maybe on a good day 3 tricks. So in both cases you need to produce 3 tricks to score plus. 1 plus is 100 for the 3 tricks and the other plus is 420 or 620 for the 3 tricks how hard is this as a choice.
