andy_h
We are South. Partner, the dealer opens 1♦ (4+♦) and we hold this collection: [hv=d=n&s=skjxxhaqj109xxdxcx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]You decide to respond 1♥ and partner rebids 1♠ promising an unbalanced hand so 5♦4♠ or better (or 4144). What's your plan?
hrothgar
I'm torn between 2♣ and 4♣. I'm not convinced that Spades is necessarily our best trump suit, so I guess that i'll start with the cheaper bid.
Jlall
2C, I plan on bidding hearts next.
ONEferBRID
I'm looking at 3 options: 1D - 1H1S - ?? 2C! = 4th suit GF 3C! = 4th suit jump = splinter for Sp 4D!* = splinter* for Sp ( since you could bid 4th suit GF first and then raise Diam if you had Diam)_____________________________________________________________* Recall the argument that 4D! is a splinter from Josh's ( I mean Justin's -- they look alike..lol ) argument in a recent thread:http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?showtopic=38337&st=15______________________________________________________________ I think I'll choose 2C! ( 4th suit GF ).If partner can't show 3 cards Hts, I can then show 4 cards Sp at a low level in a GF atmoshere; and later I'll be the one asking for key cards. Little Kid
I want to play in ♥s. In ♠s they could play ♣s and my ♠s get shortened so I can't play my ♥ suit.
Jlall
I cannot really emphasize enough that playing in a 4-4 spade fit at the game level would be a complete disaster when we have this hand.
jjbrr
ya it would tilt me so much if we got to 4♠ and you put down AQJT9xx in a suit you've only bid once so that we could play in a 4-4 fit
mike777
We are South. Partner, the dealer opens 1♦ (4+♦) and we hold this collection: Dealer: North Vul: ???? Scoring: IMP ♠ KJxx ♥ AQJ109xx ♦ x ♣ x You decide to respond 1♥ and partner rebids 1♠ promising an unbalanced hand so 5♦4♠ or better (or 4144). What's your plan? 2c This could get really ugly, confusing...sigh.
mcphee
Although the splinter is available this hand is playable in H opposite the normal support partner provides, 1 and 0. Playing in S might prove to be a problem if the hand gets forced and S break poorly. 2C leaves all the doors open.
ONEferBRID
I have had a change of "heart"...Hearts are a better choice for trump... ( I agree that a Sp contract might well be in jeopardy with Cl "taps" ).
aguahombre
What we really want to do is set spades as trump, find out about the AQ of spades, and the other two aces ---then play it in hearts. Maybe someone can do that. We can't. So, maybe setting hearts as trump after 4sf will work out to find out about the 11 obvious tricks (+a king?) if they are there, then decide whether to gamble on slam if no king. mikeh
I agree with Justin: this hand is about hearts. For game purposes, there is no contest...all you need do is imagine typical hands where you may fail even on a 3-2 trump break, in spades, yet make hearts on a 4-2 split opposite a void. As for slam: well, I'll set spades as trump only if he rebids 2♠ over my fsf 2♣, showing an improbable 5-6. otherwise, I will rebid hearts this time, cheaply, and then, if available, jump in hearts (to 4♥, not 5) to show the quality of the suit. Going slowly shows extras so we should reach all good slams.

whereagles
It's a bit risky to gamble pard has at least 2 aces and bid 4NT... On the other hand, I don't really see how I'm going to find out how many aces he has before 4NT, so I might as well bid that anyway lol.
