What's your style?

My hand is strong enough that I feel comfortable operating with a 1S opener since I'm gonna drive to slam anyways, I want to make sure to get to the right suit and getting to hearts when it's right might be tricky if I open 2C.

hmm, I was going to pick 2 on the nagging fear that 1 could pass out.  Not very often, but when it does, ouch.

Maybe a good poster hand for 1 systems?

Not sure. I think the strongest point in favour of 1 is that it copes better with enemy preemption. A strong club would also be in trouble over a high preempt.

Reminds me of a recent board from the gold coast (aus) tournament.

I had AKQTxx, AQJ9xx, x, -, and opened a strong club. Even though the opponents could make seven diamonds, if we lead the wrong major, they didn't bid at all, fortunately. Not very strong opps.

We bid

1 (any 16+) - 1 (any 0-8)

1 (any 20+) - 1 (any 0-4)

2 (any GF) - 2 (waiting)

2 - 3 (good raise)

4 - 4 (!)

6

Partner had xxx, Kxx, xxx, xxxx. :P

I can't envisage this hand being passed out with all those minors missing AND over half the pack in high card points. So it's 1 for me then if partner replies 1NT (2 over 1) I bid 2 Gazzilli which is forcing, and over the 2 relay I don't have anything to describe a hand this powerful, so bid 3 (which is forcing) and see if I get preference. I can then cue 5 and hope for a diamond reply.

If interference scuppers this plan, I rebid 6.

If partner makes a sign-off into a minor over the Gazzilli I still bid 6.

isn't 6 down on right defence?

Yes. The opening leader just has to underlead his diamond ace to get partner in for a heart ruff! :)

AKJTxxx AKQTx x -

2 because 1.5 losers, eliminates pass by partner risk. With 7 cards and only Q loser if there's a fit also welcome and not hard to find after 2>2(waiting);2 then to 3 or 3 simply use natural 3 rebid.

Another advantage there are 9 even 10 quick winners after a ruff and knocked out Q with dropped J , so just establish spades as trumps. Safer to ruff with long suit.
