obvious lead?

So the auction goes:

1C* - 2C*

2D - 2N

3H - 3N

AP

1C* = 16+

2C* = any 8+ with no 5cM, nothing about clubs

Two questions here:

1) If RHO had bid 1D or 1H, is there ever a situation/form of scoring/set of opponents/etc. where you'd bid 1S? (I was thinking about it before 2C was bid)

2) Is your lead against 3N obvious at either form of scoring?

I would lead the K expecting to be badly placed.

I feel less strongly about 1 than 2. 1 overcalls could certainly work, particularly over a negative response from RHO as it could be our hand and we could easily have a fit, and this might be our last chance to bid at a comfortable level. The auction could easily be at 3 or 4 at our next turn to bid and we'll wish we had done something originally. On the other hand, if it is our hand, we might get a chance to make a takeout double of sometime in the auction, which is much more flexible and doesn't commit to only one strain, so that is sort of ideal with this hand.

If your partner is on the same wavelength and you've agreed to overcall aggressively at the one level in their precision auctions, then I dont mind a 1 overcall. If you happen to be playing suction or something, I'd be comfortable calling this a 2-suited hand. If the opponents are in a game forcing auction, then I would be less inclined to stick my neck out.

I would bid 1 over 1 or some "8-11" 1 response, always when NV and rarely when V. Partner will often be on lead if I pass and I want him to lead spades/want me to lead.

As to the other question, I think if you always lead from KQJx vs 3NT you are not far from absolute truth.

There is much less reason to bid 1S over 1H than 1D since you're likely to be on lead if they bid 1H.

NV I would definitely bid 1S assuming partner does not also go crazy with preempting/saving because I overcalled at the 1 level over their strong club. Often you see people make a crazy overcall then their partner make a crazy preempt and they just go for a number heh.

At matchpoints white over 1D I think it is mandatory to bid 1S, you need a spade lead very badly and odds are partner will be on lead. TBH I would bid 1S red also at MP...could lead to a -200 vs nothing or worse, but gaining a trick on lead can be just as important.

Always lead a top spade here at any scoring, KQJx is such a beautiful holding.

I agree with everything justin wrote. In addition, the auction sure sounds like neither opp has 4+ spades..which is an important consideration. I mean, I'd lead the spade K anyway even if there was a risk of finding declarer with 4, but this auction very stronly suggests that that will not happen.

Ok, so it turned out that dummy had stiff Ace and declarer 1098x. Too bad. Next board, please.

lol

Worse. I led a club for -720 when we have 4 cashing spades. Lesson learned.
