I'll take a stab.

 

In the first auction double would clearly be penalty, given you've already made one penalty double. 4NT should then be take out, showing a 2 or 3 suiter and partner should bid the lower of his suits. With the two suiter, if partner bids one of your short suits, you correct to your long suit to convey your hand type.

 

Double is penalty, like I said, and partner's double would also be penalty. So his failure to double suggests that double with your hand is very risky. Whether or not you should bid 4NT, I'm not sure. For it to be right requires a lot of distribution from partner, and there is no reason to expect he doesnt have some ♠ length. I'd probably just pass and try to go plus.

 

On the second one, 4NT shows 2 places to play.

Disagree that double on the first hand would be penalty, it should be takeout. I don't see much in your argument, the first double shows we have a good hand, that has nothing to do with our spade length. On this auction we are much more likely to have a takeout double than a penalty double.

 

I can see other auctions where if the opponents run from our penalty double of 1NT we might play that double is penalty. For example, if the opponents run after the start 1X - (1NT) - Dbl then we are in a forcing auction and it makes some sense to play penalty doubles.

 

Here the opponents aren't running, they bid 4S and they probably have quite a few of those. Double should be takeout for the same reason that most doubles early in the auction are takeout.

I would make a penalty X or a takeout X or an optional X or a cooperative X or a negative X on hand 1. I have like 8 top tricks and they're w/r. Obv they could make sometimes but they rate to just have 7 spades and a weakish hand or whatever.

 

Hand 2 bid 4N. If I somehow had the agreement it showed a 3 suiter I would be tempted to quit bridge, but I guess I'd bid 5C since that's my long suit!
