Echo I should be getting Xoom on Monday. Didn't want to wait till the adobe flash comes out. But now I won't know the difference between Xoom and Ipad.

I heard there's some software/flash emulator app you can get for Xoom till the flash update. Know anything about that?

You may have wanted to wait until the 4G version comes out. You can get the current 3G upgraded for "free", but it requires returning the unit to Motorola. I am looking at Xoom as a solution (the Samsung Tab is too small, but might be more useful if you carrry it everwhere) to the iPad defects. Most of my extended family have ipad's so I will be an outcast, but the camera's true multitasking, and native Flash (well in a few weeks) make xoom look like a winner. The one I saw sure seemed faster than ipad, but it had almost no apps on it. Perhaps that slow ipad down, not sure.

Don't know about the flash emulator. Definitely waiting for the flash player update, as I also want to take advantage of the movies and TV shows with my Amazon Prime account. The 4G does require an upgrade. I don't know what I will need to do, but am hoping I can just take it into the local Verizon store for the swap out of the radios.

The news suggests it is a week long process (but free) to upgrade to 4G.

I'm thinking I'll wait until after the 4G model is available and reevaluate then.

I've been following engadget.com quite religiously ever since I decided it was time to get a smartphone and start texting people(!!!)

Looks like the only 2 big tablets out right now are ipad and xoom. Dell streak seems inferior. I would be interested in hearing reviews/experiences from anyone who has experience using both ipad and xoom, not just for BBO activities but in general. :)

Ben I had no idea the upgrade was going to be so much hassle. Sad face.

I don't think honeycomb is quite ready, even though the hardware for xoom is nice.

The app selection is pretty limited, and even if you do get an interesting one, it isn't really for honeycomb, but obviously for android phones.

Surfing net is fast and nice even with 3G.

No flash at all is a deal breaker, so I'll probably get another android tablet soon (galaxy?) and try to bingo with it. This one is going back to the shop. :D

Flash for xoom in something like a "few weeks". Maybe you might want to hold on to the xoom for a small while. The samsung tab thing is sort of small (some people like the smaller size for carrying it around). On the otherhand, if you haven't bought one yet, waiting for G4 (and flash) seems to make sense. Flash is memory hog and slow so having G4 with it would be nice for sure.

I am returning my xoom for now. Will get another android tab soon though.

No flash would be a deal breaker for me - one main reason is to play BBO lol. How to play without flash? :-s That seems to rule out ipad2. Why are they so stubborn about flash. :(

Just saw a coupon for $100 off xoom.

At some point we should start another thread for android tablet...

Flash is optimized for great graphics on a desktop, saving energy is not part of the design. Running a flash application would empty the batteries within 1-2 hours.

Flash is a native application on the device it is running on, it is a main target of hackers these days. Allowing flash on a mobile device requires a lot security modifications.

Implementing security works best if the software and the system is under control of the same manufacturer, obviously Adobe and Apple are separate companies and do not wish to share their knowhow with each other.

Having control about hardware, operating system and software is a key element of what makes Apple's gadgets special, they can't give that away.

In principle it *might* be possible, but I suspect it would be a lot of work for us to get it to work.

I don't think you should factor in the hope/expectation that you will be able to use the BBO web-client into your decision as to whether or not to buy an iPad. I do think that there will eventually be a way to play on BBO through the iPad (or just about any other device that can run a proper web-browser) that will not depend on Flash.

But I really can't predict how long "eventually" means in this context. Neither "a few months" nor "a few years" would shock me.

Probably it is already possible to kibitz BBO tables through the iPad (in the same way that this is possible on the iPhone - www.bridgebase.com/mobile).

Fred,

I just learned of a program called LogMeIn that acts as a remote desktop .. There is a $30 app one can load on an iPad so that you can use the iPad from anywhere to access BBO or whatever as long as one's home computer is on.

Does this seem like a good idea?

There is indeed an application called LogMeIn, made by a company named LogMeIn.com, that will allow to make your ipad, iphone, any android phone, tablet. window, linux or apple computer run as remote for any computer you want to. Simply download the application, and list the computers you want to control from that device. On each computer you want to control , download the plug in, create an account and list the machines you wish to control remotely. Then, from yout iPad, log on to that machine, using the proper password. A few seconds later, you will be on your machine just as if you were at its keyboard. Even the mouse works the same. It is truly an amazing application and well worth the $30 they charge you for it.

I don't know if this is a revelation or anything but I just played 2 hands from an HP Touchpad! Crazy. The cards were dadgum small! Too small really but it worked. Just went to the site via the web browser and logged in as normal. Like I said I am not sure if that is old hat now or not. I thought the tablets were pretty much out for playing on BBO.

The problem with the ipad and iphone is that apple doesn't want to support Flash. I'm not informed about HP's policy, but I suspect they allow Flash, in which case it's obvious you can play on that tablet. ;)

Really BBO should have an iPhone app and an Android app. Just making the existing interface small would not make a great interface. The phone and tablet devices really are different than desktop and laptop devices: no keyboard, no mouse, but touch screen, gestures, tilt sense, and in general smaller screens. This calls for a different implementation for a comfortable user experience. It would be nice if BBO either implemented apps, or allowed an independent party to write and sell apps.

Android supports flash, but for some reason all attempts to enter a password fail. It appears that any key typed appears as an 'a' then vanishes. The vanishing part is okay, as that is normal security, but the proper letter should appear first.

Hmmm... I wonder what would happen if I changed my password to all 'a's. :)

This did not work either.

Has anyone tried BBO on an Amazon Kindle Fire yet?

Yes -have problem putting password in- first letter shows up briefly then reverts to empty box with cursor flashing. I can access the site but you have to go to new member and choose new name and password and login through that page. Unfortunately this means every time you want to access site you have to become new member! I have been on to Amazon support and they attempted to login using the Fire but no dice. Tech are calling me back in a few days with, hopefully, a way to get round this- will keep you informed
