iPad Application

Recommended Posts

In principle it *might* be possible, but I suspect it would be a lot of work for us to get it to work.

I don't think you should factor in the hope/expectation that you will be able to use the BBO web-client into your decision as to whether or not to buy an iPad. I do think that there will eventually be a way to play on BBO through the iPad (or just about any other device that can run a proper web-browser) that will not depend on Flash.

But I really can't predict how long "eventually" means in this context. Neither "a few months" nor "a few years" would shock me.

Probably it is already possible to kibitz BBO tables through the iPad (in the same way that this is possible on the iPhone - www.bridgebase.com/mobile).

PLEASE make BBO available for the IPAD. It would be great for bridge while we travel. I promise to play more pay tournaments if you can expedite our request.

We would even send a check to you to help defray the costs. The ipad is easy to see for older folks and BBO at large is what we would desire. Thanks, gail and Bill Zanger

I can't make any promises or any guesses as to when, but I suspect there will eventually be a solution for you and other iPad users.

I agree that iPads are nice machines that are well-suited to online bridge play.

Thanks for your patience.

Apple should pay bbo to make this happen for ipad, as I can see me and bill gates buying an ipad to play on bbo if it happened... :)

(only way I would buy one is if I could play on bbo with it)....

I cannot imagine Bill Gates ever buying an ipad, an iphone, an ipod, or any other apple product.

I once saw an interview in which he said his wife and kids all wanted iPhones, but that there was a family rule against owning any Apple products that they were just going to have to honor.

Bill: "Zunes for Christmas, kids!"

Gates kids: "awww"

I keep waiting for someone to jailbreak the ipad and load flash to it (the one for android phones perhaps) and see if it runs V2 (flash version) well enough to make buying an ipad seem reasonable....

yes, yes... no doubt jailbreaking an ipad voids warrenty, etc....

I didn't realize the recession had hit him that hard.

Then things have changed in the past decade for Gates, because he did an awful lot of demos in the 90s on Macs and Microsoft makes a lot of money off their Mac applications.

Fred, I haven't looked into the mechanics deeply enough to be certain, but the Safari running on the iPad is targeted by Dashcode as the desktop version and not the mobile version. That is probably a factor of the screensize, but it's possible that it is a "proper Web browser" and Apple has just disabled the support for plug-ins such as Flash.

On Thursday, the samsung ipad similiar product is being introduced in Berlin. It will come in a 7 inch and 10 inch version, ony has G3 I hear, but runs android and comes standard with FLASH.

If anyone is going to be there (like I said, Berlin), see if they will try BBO's Flash version on it. the screen should be big enough to work nicely. I got no idea if the product will be good or not, but some features (earphone plug, correct screen size for video, usb port for external storage) are attractive. G3 seems a little dated.

I'm no expert on mobile app development but it seems like a first pass [sic] might be enabling a way to simply play some hands. The BBO system is an excellent and robust interface (thanks to Fred and other developers!), and Flash is a great interface builder, but it is not the only way to present cards and execute animations. I'm wondering whether a trimmed down version that just allowed people to play some hands (even if limited to only playing other iPhone/iPad users) would make many of us very happy.

Is there a specification for how information is transmitted to and from BBO servers?

Another option could be to have an App in the App Store to play Bridge online with other players. You can even charge decent amount for the App and people will be willing to pay for it. When I got my dad an iPad, he was keen to play Bridge online. Since BBO didn't work, I paid $20 to buy "Bridge Island" App only to find that there are not many players online available to play. I would be willing to pay another $20 or more if BBO is in App Store.
