Hieroglyphics

Today I've watched some of the Swiss Mixed pairs from Norway. Every match had player names on the live Vugraph - yet when I look at the saved file ,there are no names - only the following :

"pw|J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|

and more lines like that.

What has gone wrong? Is it just down to operator laziness - can't be bothered to change the names as new pairs arrive or are there technical reasons why he can't input the names?

I'm not an expert on LIN files, but my understanding is that a single LIN file for a session only has space for the names of the eight players involved (for a teams match). For a session of pairs where the operator has changed the names of the players after each movement is called, I expect that the LIN file at the end will only contain the names of the players who played the last round. The only work-around I canthink of would be for the operator to close the presentation after each round and the reload the hands with a new round number. This would be quite a lot of work to do and would be a bit inconvenient for spectators - particularly for short rounds.

Lin files can include the name of each person for each hand.. for instance, if yhou have ever played in a tournment on line, open the tournment file and move from table to table as you play, and see the names change in both the result table and on the individual deals.... the part of hte header that affects this looks like this....

pw|inquiry,LindaC107,lbyer,hypatia_3,inquiry,LindaC107,lbyer,hypatia_3,scarlettt,inquiry,WillK,lbyer,scarlettt,inquiry,WillK,lbyer,inquiry,FilisFilis,lbyer,yaco,inquiry,FilisFilis,lbyer,yaco|

From this header, Ibyer and I played two boards against lindaC107 and hypatia_3, then we played agaisnt scarlettt and willk tow boards, then against Fifils and yaco two boards. We were NS on the first two boards, and EW on the last four.

Likewise if you play in the main room, the header might look like this...

pw|inquiry,ginia,zarpetkov,ronco,,,wwalter,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|

Here, I started off with Zar as my partner (yes that ZAR) against ginia and ronco. ronco was replace on board two by wwalter. if you count all the commmas you can see how many boards played... and if someone else joined later, their name would be between the later commas on the right board.

This pw|name1,name2,name3,name4| format controls what is shown in the vg table before you look at the hands. For the boards themselves, the command for names is |pn|inquiry, ginia, zarpetkov, ronco|

If someone would send me the swiss movement file at inquiry@you know where dot com (bridgebase), I will see if I can figure out what went wrong.

This bug manifests itself during vugraph of pairs events.

Another sympton of the same bug is that the player names

in the Movie window during these vugraphs are also wrong.

It will take some fairly serious server changes to fix this

and I am not sure when we will get a chance to make

these modifications. Hopefully before the Generali

Individual tournament in mid-September.

The next version of the BBO client will leave the player

names blank (instead of garbage), but in order to make

everything work properly, some server changes will

be required.

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Thank you fred...

To those wanting to fix the existing copies of the lin file on their computer, here is the problem. Very early in the file, there is a line that looks like this....

pw|J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|

If you edit the that line to look like...

pw|Fred,DenisO,inquiry,mrdct,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,<J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,J,|øÌ,ìˆ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|

It would look like the four posters in this thread played the first hand. It would be a pain, but if anyone has a record of who played NS/and EW for each round the file could be edited manually. I wonderr why the players name on each board (using the pn command) are not in the file. that would make this easier to fix.
