From a Danish open teams selection tournament. Opponents are very strong.

[hv=d=s&v=e&s=skq9hkj93dacaq1084]133|100|Scoring: XIMP[/hv]

2 - (X) - XX - (6)

???

2 = Unknown gameforce or 19+ balanced.

X = Undiscussed.

XX = Excactly one control, forced.

Double is defined as penalty, and partner will never pull.

What do you bid?

If you pass or double, what do you lead?

- What hand do I have to imagine I have? The unknown GF or the 19+ balanced? B)

- Opponents are very strong but don't know what 2-Dbl means? :P

I guess Dbl, we're missing 2 Aces unless partner has a void.

I was only Kibitzing, and that was all the information I got.

Ah ok :)

Btw, I'd lead A

I am sorry but I don't understand this thread. partner has 1 control so we don't have grand. Opps bid to the 6 level. So we double them.

Are you asking about the lead?

I don't understand.

And what has all this got to do with Clint Eastwood?

I suppose the possibility of bidding and making 6NT did not occur to anyone.

In any case, I don't see how you can do anything but double and lead the A. However, given that this problem is posted, that cannot be the right answer (especially the part about leading the A).

You are the only one good enough to make 6N here off 2 aces art. You are also the only one good enough to try to make 6N off 2 aces rather than double 6S white against red!

Does "one control" mean something different these days?

It used to mean:

ace=2 controls, king=one control.

Both missing aces might be onside, though.

I assumed that one control must mean something different, or else there is absolutely no reason why this is posted here (except as a lead problem).

Perhaps one "first round" control?

I guess we will shortly see the actual hand, but I have to confess I don't see this as the type of problem that would be discussed for more than 30 seconds in a post game pub meeting, other than the weirdness of the auction.

Double: what rational choice is there? 6N is absurd. Pass is idiotic.

As for the lead, partner has a minor suit King. We will likely learn which one it is after leading the diamond A....a lead that calls for attitude re the King if the King is not in dummy. So, unless someone ruffs our stiff, we have time to switch....I have sneaking sympathy for a heart lead, in case we need to establish a trick there, but I'm not looking to get greedy on defence at this vulnerability....this is not going to be an auction duplicated at the other table.

They are red/white so they might be cold! We should pass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought about that: after all, they are very strong opps:[hv=w=sajxxhaxxxdcxxxxx&e=s109xxxxhxdkqj1098c]266|100|[/hv]

Maybe West should redouble?

Edit: I put a second spade 9 into this hand...S held it...but deep analysis persuades me that making East's spades 10xxxxx works just as well :blink:

Note that 6N is a great save....maybe Art forsaw this?

Of course. That is exactly what I had in mind.

:blink:

Really, though, why is this hand posted when the answer is so obvious? How could anyone ever not double 6?
