stop or climb?

Recommended Posts

i saw an auction like this, it was kinda funny... 3H opened, p/p/x/p then 4H was bid by advancer... doubler thought then bid 5H... advancer thought and bid 6H... doubler bid 6S off 3

i have no idea what advancer's bids meant, he had 2 hearts, but his profile had 'expert' so it must have been ok... anyway, i'd pass here

6♠, maybe we make it

I see undead people

You also see cards in your hand that aren't there. :)

Or perhaps your partners are very conservative.

Im a bidder too (4N). The 5 level seems safe and pard shouldn't jump to 4 holding 4 moderate spades; I prefer a 4 cue to add some flexibility with these types of hands. I think you can construct a hand where 7 is a possibility, much less 6: AQxxx, Axxx, xx xx.

Won't there be problems in 7 opposite this.

You will need to ruff two hearts in the dummy with the J10 of trumps out and set up diamonds. I think you are likely to go off when RHO has J10x or trumps or diamonds don't break - you may be able to recover in some of these situations.

The problem with this hand is that slam will fail when we have a 3rd round loser in either minor but probably diamonds since a 3rd round club loser might be able to be pitched on the diamonds. There is no way to communicate this to partner.

Nevertheless slam could make opposite a perfect minimum AQxxxx and out might be enough. Therefore we are worth one try for slam.

I try with 5 this shows a heart control. I would raise to 5 with a small doubleton heart. I do not Blackwood as that will get us to slam opposite unsuitable minimums.

I expect to miss slam sometimes when it is laydown but at least get to slam some of the time when it is making.

Vul.: NS

you hold:

S: K98

H: X

D: AKT9X

C: AK98

W  N  E  S

3H P  P  X

P  4S P  ?

What do you bid if you go on?

I PASS and put a possible BAD result (like 6 COLD) down to a GOOD 3 prempt  if P has AQxxxx---- which is what I would hope he has still no guarantee for 6 and I think even with Axxxxxxx I would hope P would bid 4

Well, I think I said 7 is a possibility. Seems to me it needs 3-3 diamonds (or LHO holding Quack - x, and LHO holding only 6 hearts). We've all been in worse slams, but it certainly doesn't hit the 67% mark for IMPs :D

6 is very good with this. And with many hands where partner doesn't have the A, but the AQ; 6 is also good. I concede that we can't discover partner's minor controls, but either minor queen gives us some play, if not make it cold.
