2 part question

Recommended Posts

1S for sure. If you made it slightly weaker I would pass. I hate a style where it is a 2S opener, but many people are successful with such a style.

Ace sixth is the worst holding for a preempt (it is terrible for offense, especially if doubled, and good for defense), you have a bunch of stuff outside which makes it likely to me that partner will misjudge the auction later, and your hand would play very well in hearts or diamonds if partner had some length there. To me it's just not a preemptive hand. The good spade spots do help the cause for preempting though.

A lot of people hate passing with hands like this as much as I hate opening a weak 2 with it though, I guess it just comes down to taste, I feel like I don't get bad results from passing though.

That said to me it is strong enough for an opening bid, and even if you consider it borderline being white at MP with spades is a big argument for opening if possible.

3 is nuts IMHO. If it's too strong for 2 then 1. The time to open 3 on a 6-card suit is a hand that has insufficient HCPs for 1 but too much offensive strength for 2. This hand has adequate offensive strength for 2, the question is if it has enough HCPs for 1 and if it has enough O-D for 2.

I think neither so I am inclined to pass. At least on the forum. At the table I might have opened 2.

1 is not my style, playing 2/1. You have to count the sec queen to come to rule-of-20. OK the spots are nice but not great. Playing Precision (or Acol or WJ for that matter) I am OK with 1.

1. And did someone really rank 3 and 4 above P and 2?
Somebody did :) He preferred 1 but rated the others as as poor bids that would rarely work. Why his sympathy for 3 and 4? On the face of it, aren't they uninsurable? He may have been persuaded by Terence Reese's argument about "Pre-empts that are known to be weak". Zia Mahmoud has also endorsed the advisability of an occasional bluff.

In the light of criticism, however, he would probably revise his assessment :) Perhaps ...

1 = 10, 2 = 5, 3 = 3, _P = 2, 4 = 1

A98753 QT3 K95 Q

Ok, 1 it was, you are playing Italian cues (I think that's the name) cueing A,K,stiff, void

1:2N

3:3

?

Please answer for both MP and IMP scoring

My hand just got a lot better...

Partner has 4+ card trump support which helps assuage the trump quality options.

I was able to show my club shortage and partner didn't immediately get turned off. With luck,, he doesn't have too much wasted opposite my stiff.

I'd probably temporize with 3.

I don't object to an immediate 4.

As Richard said, I struck gold.

But: partner denied something in diamonds.

So he needs something like

KQxx, Akxx,xxx,Ax

to make 6 a real good contract.

OTOH partner won't have much less, if he bids 3 over 3 .

So, do whatever you do, make another move.

An interesting observation about polls regarding opening calls:

I believe that many people, even if not playing a standard or 2/1 system at the time, are influenced by a "forcing club" background when choosing to open very light. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just an observation.

Justin: you prefer 1S with this hand (A9XXXX QTX K9X Q), but would pass if it were lightly weaker. Do you mean A9XXXX QTX K9X J?

Not really sure how [hv=n=skqxxhakxxdxxxcax&s=sa98753hqt3dk95cq]133|200|[/hv]

is a good slam.

I'm not sure how to stay out of slam when it's not there on these types of auctions. I guess my plan is bid 4, bid 4 over 4, and pass 4?

Incidentally, this seems like the kind of hand where a lot of B/I would bid 4 right now, embarrassed that they'd already overbid their hands.
