pooltuna
Dealer: South Vul: N/S Scoring: MP ♠ AJ7 ♥ A ♦ AK843 ♣ AT53 You bid in first seat, what will it be? 2NT This is a straight forward hand. Those who will bid 2NT with a stiff A or K will. Those who won't will bid 1♦ planning on a 3♣ reverse or bidding game in ♠ if the opportunity presents itself. So take your poison!!! Siegmund
Put me down for 1♦, thankyouverymuch. Even if you occasionally open 2NT with a singleton in an otherwise suitable hand, this time you have 1) a singleton in a major you'll often be transferred into, 2) Hardly any tenaces 3) two suits to bid naturally if you choose. I'd be much more willing to open AQxx KJxx A AQxx with 2N than the posted hand.

Hanoi5
1♦. I have too little in the Majors to worry about Pass-Pass-Pass.
ArtK78
1♦. I have too little in the Majors to worry about Pass-Pass-Pass. I am not worried about 1♦ - All Pass. If that happens, odds are that I am in the right contract. The same cannot be said for 2NT.

jdonn
This is a non-problem. Sorry to anyone who chooses it but 2NT absolutely sucks. There are no rebid problems after 1♦ and you are well suited for suit play. The stiff A/K thing is for when you have an otherwise difficult hand to show (typically 1444 or 4441), which is just not the case here. That would be cliche overriding judgment run amok. peachy
1D. I don't mind a singleton K or A, even Q sometimes in a pinch to be sure I have a reasonable rebid, for a 2NT opening, but this hand is very wrong for 2NT.
Free
Agree with almost everyone: we have a normal 1♦ opening, so there's nothing wrong with opening it 1♦... Don't even think about opening stronger, and don't be afraid that you're too strong because of that 1 little HCP.
the hog
1D looks obvious. Can't imagine anything else.
cloa513
You have the control cards if partner bids NT with queens or KJ then all the better so 1 ♦ is fine.
effervesce
Agree with 1♦. Slightly worried about missing a game where partner passes - wow @ all the controls the hand has.

CSGibson
AQxxxx Axx x Kxx What do you open? Seriously, is there a real alternative to 1♦ here?
dburn
AQxxxx Axx x Kxx What do you open? Seriously, is there a real alternative to 1♦ here?Judging by the methods apparently in use on the hand CSGibson quotes, I would say not - the hand is unsuitable for opening six spades, or three hearts, or three clubs, so one diamond is all that is left. It seems like the 1 diamond opening is obvious for OP unless you play a precision system or something else with specialized bidding. It seems so obvious to me that I questioned why it was in the advanced/expert forum.
aguahombre
Yep, descriptive and space-saving, dburn. Excellent choice from the obvious alternatives.
