(2D)-4NT?

2D is

a. diamonds weak

b. diamonds intermediate

c. diamonds strong

I assume that the 4NT call was an overcall to 2 and not a response.

First, it is bizarre and an invitation to disaster regardless of whether it has a worthwhile meaning.

Second, over a weak or even an intermediate 2 opening, since with a very strong balanced hand I would expect direct seat to double, the 4NT bid must show 10 playing tricks, a very strong hand, and a high card (A or K) control in diamonds. Something like:

AQ AQ Kx AKQJTxx

This would allow advancer to properly evaluate his aces and kings as tricks for slam purposes.

Over a strong 2 opening the 4NT bid is a puzzlement. It must show a wildly distributional hand with clubs and a major, but I can't imagine why someone would want to by-pass the 4 level to show this.

So you are saying that 4NT is ace-asking?
