dickiegera
Does anyone have a defense for Mini Roman that they could suggest???Thank you
kenrexford
The classic defense: double and lead trumps.
jjbrr
just bid naturally. and lead trumps if the opps bid weakly.
aguahombre
pass and lead trumps. Don't enter the auction with questionable values, because everything will break badly for you and the other side can defend pretty much double dummy. Double should be about 16+notrump.2NT, also a NT bid, but more trick-oriented, like a nice long minor.
peachy
Wait in the bushes. Then pounce, lead trump, and collect. I think Mini Roman is wonderful, more opponents should be playing it ;)
CSGibson
I play that an immediate X is a strong NT hand. I've had an auction where it went (2♦)-X-(2♥)-X-All pass for 1400. Then again, the mini roman hand decided to pass with short hearts, so they wound up playing their 3-1 fit, so maybe that's only best defense if the mini roman bidder was drinking before the play. I imagine them opening 2♦ and alerting. They explain Mini-Roman, and then you have to further ask: has s/he been drinking? I also play X as 14-16 balanced or really big hand. Roy Hughes in his book calls all similar doubles as "training the guns." Although here it is not quite as free as it is possible they can play 2♦x or 2♦xx profitably sometimes. aguahombre
Wait in the bushes. Then pounce, lead trump, and collect. I think Mini Roman is wonderful, more opponents should be playing it ;) Agree, unless played properly and with solid agreements. But the question is what defenses to use, not whether to use the convention yourself. Whether you like it or hate it, you need defenses. I can assure you that properly applied countermeasures by the opening side will result in many more disasters for people who compete with marginal hands. Unless you have a 10-or 11 card fit you will not get a favorable break in any trump or side suit (Assuming a true 4 4 4 1, not the bastardizations). That *is* a defense: Do not enter the auction in direct seat unless we hold an extremely exceptional hand. Balance with a Dbl if we are balancing.
