how should this auction go?

Recommended Posts

North: Yes, North must certainly dbl 1.

East: 2 is maybe ok by a passed hand. What system are you playing? If 2 promises a 2nd bid as it does in SAYC, then 2 is likely to take you too high.

South: South could have bid 3 or even 4 if North had doubled. As it is he has to pass.

West: West must pass 2.

This is Interest rather than A&E.

So excuse my question, why should North double rather than bid 1NT?

Because he doesn't have a stopper in Opener's suit.

Ah - of course I hadn't noticed.

So 1NT overcall promises at least one solid stopper. I play in a different country.

At least the pair does not fit well. If there style is to pass 1 and 2 with the north hand, south has an easy reopening with his great shape...

I had never bid 1 NT with the north hand. I had doubled too, but even if my partner had not (give him 2344 f.e.), I had surely reopened with the south hand.

Does anyone open as East?

As South?

If it goes P-(P)-1-Dbl, should East Rdble to show strength?

I think it would be reasonable to open the East hand.

I wouldn't open the S hand. You are vulnerable in 2nd seat so a 2 opening should be based on no more than one flaw. The hand has three flaws: the bad spade suit, the void, the 4-card heart suit.

E should not redouble. He needs to show both his two suits so he can't wait to the 3rd round starting describing his hand. Especially since if he redoubles S is likely to preempt in spades.

Maybe you Americans would bid 1NT with this but us Europeans would double.

So you are saying most Europeans would make an illegal call? Because I think most bridge players (North American as well) who play strong NT openings would open 1NT but X 1 since they don't have a stopper.

if partner has Axxx, and at most 2 hearts for his double, we already have 6+ 2 heart ruffs in dummy for 8 tricks

until RHO overruffs, that is, with his stiff/xx

The double by North is so obvious to most. I look at it differently.

1) North really can't pass.

2) Double not only has less than ideal shape, but also does not have 4 spades to compensate.

3) 1NT shows the size and shape, with one little flaw --which a transfer to hearts or a later cue can uncover if necessary.

And, as luck would have it, the NT overcall would keep us out of the spade game and rest us in a partial.

Double not only has less than ideal shape, it also lacks four spades, and on top of that it is too long in hearts, additionally it doesn't even have two four card minors. For these 17 reasons I think double is wrong. B)
