Sanity Check

I feel I have to act, partner could easily have 10xx, xxx, AQxx, QJx which will make 3N. I would double rather than bid 3, 3N is a lot more likely to make than 4.

:) Er...sorry if my original post wasn't clear...partner opened 3, so he is fairly unlikely to hold that hand :)

W/R at matchpoints in a weak field you hold:

KQJxx KQJ Kxx xx

Pass, 3, pass to you.

Anything to say here?

Normally I'd pass, but against some opponents I might try 2.

I know that opposite my regular partner I want to bid 2, but I am afraid the rules prevent me from doing that.

Sorry, easy pass, give partner a nice hand like AKJxxxx and out, what are you making ?

If he has 10xx, xx, x, AKxxxxx and 4 is on, unlucky, far more often he'll have x, xx, xxx, AKxxxxx.

When the hand came up I thought it was a wtp pass...+130 was a poor matchpoint result, since almost every other pair was in either 3NT or 4 making. Partner had a normal hand, something like Txx x xx AQJxxxx, and it takes the opps finding a club ruff on the opening lead to beat 4; there were several ways for them to misdefend and let 3NT through.

I am at least the third to misread the bidding... Amazing.

As it is, it is a wtp pass. Had the bidding been pass 3 however, this had been ugly....

there were several ways for them to misdefend and let 3NT through.

so they get two chances to always beat 3NT, either red suit lead or +switch, and then you're still on a club finesse, and you're upset that you went +130? Even a spade lead and a switch could be enough to beat this. If the club hook is off, ANY lead will beat it. seems sort of silly. They could even duck twice and then you'll have communication problems. It seems to me that 3NT only makes because of a miracle layout and nobody in the room defending like a human being.

I know this is resulting, but the fact that no game makes isnt enough to convince you that this is perfectly fine? Getting to 4 is impossible anyway.

Nothing has suggested to me that the opening poster is upset. He took an action that seemed right to him, it didn't work out well on the given hand, and he's here asking for a "sanity check" to make sure he shouldn't be adjusting his judgment.

It sounded to me like he was very unhappy getting few matchpoints and was looking for excuses to bid more.

No, TimG is correct. I wasn't upset at all about our result on the board...I was simply suprised more people weren't in the same contract, and as TimG suggested, I was curious whether A) my initial judgment was correct, and B) whether the strength of the field would/should factor into the decision about whether to take any action with this hand or not. I've been on both sides of the "rub of the green" hands too many times to get too worked up about any single result, as I'm sure you have too.

My opinion regarding strength of field is that you should not pay much attention to it. If you're playing in a weak field, the purpose is probably to practice for "real" events rather than beat the field. You'll get better practice in if you do the right thing.

Really easy pass. Might make, might go off one.

If partner has anything like a favorable-vulnerability 3C bid, 3NT is gonna be slightly worse than 0%.

R/W it's actually an interesting question - between seeing if partner has 3 spades or just gambling on 3NT.

Edited to add: I see you've posted the hand. Even in 2nd seat that's a super-max for favorable 3C and you STILL need misdefence to make anything. If partner's a trick worse that that you wouldn't have a prayer.
