play 4S

Recommended Posts

If you run 9 and it loses, RHO may not be very endplayed. He might just play a diamond to his partner's ace to get a club through. To run 9 is to play for A offside or A onside.

If I'm going to play for that, I may as well play a diamond to the jack (or king). If that loses to the queen (ace) and a diamond comes back, I can throw a club. The best East can do after winning the first diamond is to play back a heart. However, I can play for split honours - if he plays a high heart, I win in hand and finesse into the safe hand; if he plays a low one, I win in dummy, ruff a diamond (in case the other honour comes down), and play two more rounds of hearts. I still have the club finesse in reserve.

That works all of the time that the Whereagles/Fluffy line works, and also whenever RHO has one or two heart honours.
