I like to bid as much as anyone, but I'd pass with this. It's a pipless 4441 10-count. If we bid with this, we'll get too high far too often.

At the table I doubled and felt a little bit dirty for doing so. We ended up with a bad score, but I didn't necessarily want to attribute that to the dbl prematurely.

 

Polling local experts it was 4:2 in favour of double-wtp, against pass-wtp (with one fence sitter). It seemed that most of the pass-wtp backers were rubber bridge players in a former life. Same on the forums?

I never played rubber bridge, I pass because I think double cattering for a range of 10 to 24 HCP or so, its a too wide range to have, so I like to act sound and reopen weak. This style is more useful for slam bidding, and awful for partscore battles.

ya pass-wtp is not an option imo. There are so many cons of pass that it's not clear at all, but I would still pass because I don't think this hand is strong enough for a t/o double. I expected to be in the minority when I first posted my answer.

It is my style that a double in direct seat over a preempt shows a good hand if the shape is right, and a very good hand if the shape is wrong. This is a fair hand with the right shape.

 

I pass, and I consider it to be a wtp since it is about a K short of my requirements for a direct seat double. But I understand that others would double as their requirements are lower.

4441 is more of a NT shape, unless you have a great fit and partner also have some ruffing values. In this case besides possible trump fit you still have absolutely spot-less 4-4, if partner also has 3-4 cards in those suits, you may have a lot of losing tricks.

 

Also your HCP power isn't that great, partner will on average count on something more. I have only 3 honors all in different suits, and aces work well in defense too.

I would pass. Have to have some standards, and even though 4441 is 'perfect' it contains so little playing strength. Can live with double ofc.

Dbl clear BECAUSE I have a system of clear weak/strong responses AND weak rebids.

 

ALSO I have other direct-seat bids to show various strong shapes, so little or no chance partner lights it up this hand.
