2 over 1

Recommended Posts

I have two questions about 2 over 1.

When playing 2 over 1 GF , do you play if as forcing to any game, or could you stop in 4m.

When playing 2/1 as GF or inv with 6 card (only rebiding the suit is inv the rest is GF) how do you show a GF hand with a good 6 card suit ?

A new partnership should play it forcing to game. I learned this the hard way by playing a hand with 15 top tricks in 4C. I believe that most partnerships have getouts that allow them to stop in 4m but you must have firm agreements with your partner exactly when those apply. Most of these apply when you have a misfit with a suit that's weakly stopped for NT, or your fit is a minor and you know you're missing a stopper.

I don't have a good answer, which is why I don't play it this way. I presume you have to make up a new suit, or guess to play the hand in notrump if that seems appropriate.

Go through 4th suit forcing if opener bids a new suit.

If opener rebids his own suit I like to play 2NT as an artificial force. I don't usually play 2/1 GF or even promising a rebid so I often need to find a forcing bid. However I think this would still work in a 2/1 context with responder's rebid as non-forcing.

1 2

2 2NT = artificial force - one of opener's priorities will be to show three-card support for responders clubs or perhaps doubleton support if you would raise to 3 freely with three.

In Lawrence's method a 2-o-1 response creates a game force except:

1X-2Y

2X-3Y

and

1X-2Y

2Z*-3Y (not reverse, so with a minimum 4522 you have to rebid hearts or use Flannery)

2Y is not forcing to 4Y, only to 3Y. Since responder is now limited, 4Y by responder is non-forcing. It's not always clear when opener's bid is forcing, for example

1X-2Y

2X-3Y

3X-?

If you have a GF hand with a good 6-card, you could use a strong jump shifts. Also, a 2NT response is natural and GF so you don't have to use a 2-o-1 response with a 4-card or a bad 5-card. This means that first 2m and then 2NT shows a decent 5-card. You may have to do it with a 6-card, too, if it's not strong enough for a jump shift. Otherwise you make up a new suit.

'normal' 2/1 plays any 2/1 as a game force (except 1d/2c/2any/3c)... however, except in instances when opener shows more values, rosenkrantz recommends playing any rebid by responder at the 3 level as nonforcing... exceptions would be:

1h : 2d

2s : 3d

1h : 2d

3c : 3d

1s : 2d

2nt : 3d

those are all game force

I used to play that we could stop in 4m, but found that the number of times we'd look to stop in 4m is small compared to the number of times we'd like it to be forcing.

Find another bid! Often 2NT or a 3-card fragment is used.

Find another bid, it's not brainsurgery.

Not every bid is clearcut in bridge, sometimes you have make up a bid. This is one of these times.
