Facing a hand that is obviously game going I think we have to bid 4D even though it is a bit less than we would like. Lets say partner holds a good 14, which include the AK S, A H and KC, if we raise to 4S is he going to take another bid looking at 2 small D when a lot of the time the 4S raise may even be based on 3 small, or perhaps only 2. Assuming we bid 4D if partner bids 4H we can slow down with 4S. Even when partner has less than all the nice cards we would like to see 4D is not the so terrible. My hand contains 3 nice controls along with a 4th trump, I am willing to risk this aggressive push here.

The Q is now zero. So, this is a near perfect 11 ... but still 11.

Just 4 for me, I think if partner has enough for slam he will make a move, and I will gladly cooperate. I don't think he needs all that much for his 3 call NV over a weak bid, perhaps only AKxxxx and out.

[hv=d=s&v=n&n=sakxxxhaqxdxxxckx&s=sqjxxhkjxdqcaxxxx]133|200|Scoring: IMP

1 - (3) - 3 - (pass)

4 - all pass [/hv]

My partner bid 4 considering his hand a normal minimum opening.

Looking at three small diamonds I thought even the five level could be too high, losing three tricks from the lead.

Should I have tried something anyway or just say "well done" to the preempter?

Your partner should have bid 4D :).

For you to have three immediate diamond losers, how would the suit have to be distributed around the table?

I don't disagree with your main point, though, If partner has a minimum with a wasted diamond card, the five level may well be too high. For example, Jxx KJxx Kx Axxx

Now that I've constructed that example and compared it to opener's actual hand, I think it's clear for him to bid 4.
