CSGibson
I admit I would double. I have support for all three suits, no particular desire to have a heart led if partner's hand indicates another lead is appropriate, and my overbid now means that I can make minimum noises the rest of the auction, knowing I've already expressed all of my values. I lose if partner has exactly 3 hearts, < 3 spades, and < 5 clubs, but gain when he has 4+ spades or 5+ clubs and less than 3 hearts, because partner is much more likely to compete, and in setting up the defense for this hand against suit contracts. I don't even preclude the possibility of playing in hearts when that is right.

Phil
1N for takeout rules at this vul :).. Edit: I am not a fan of 1N for takeout period, much less after a 3rd seat opener just in front of you. I admit I would double. I think people should actually try OS before they criticize it. Many of your arguments demonstrate that you haven't. ------ I used to be a crusader for double on hands like this but I've mellowed a lot. With these hearts and these spades I still probably double but don't feel that strongly about it. San Diego Michaels is a LOL. Passing is a HUGE LOL. jjbrr
overcall structure. where NT is t/o and double shows some goodish hand, usually balanced.
Phil
overcall structure. where NT is t/o and double shows some goodish hand, usually balanced. Sorry. However I doubt the term "Overcall Structure" wouldn't help that much if you've never come across it, unless you've been on the forums for awhile or live in such places as Orange County, CA, Coos Bay, OR or parts of North Carolina. When I say that I'm not a big fan of 1N for takeout, I was referring mostly to a detestation of the "sandwich" NT, which I feel is probably in the same genus, if not the same species, as this "OS" that you are talking about. I therefore executed a transfer. I still do not like the concept, though, having thought about both possible continuations and defenses to those continuations a bit over the past 12 hours or so. That's not the same as saying that it's unplayable, but I wouldn't want to play it.

the hog
For example, to play 2H instead of defending 2D. I mean of course some bad things might happen if you bid 1H but don't you think you overstate your case? It's fine if you think x will work better I guess but at least acknowledge that 1♥ wins over x whenever we have a 5-3 heart fit and it loses only rarely if we have a 4-4 spade fit. Also an overcall does not misrepresent our strength quite as much as a takeout double. Of course bidding 1 Heart has many upsides too, so has passing or bidding 1 ♠. I just like to state the reasons why I have an opinion instead of just stating an opinion. I have no idea how you will find your spade fit after 1 Heart and I have no idea why you think double misinterprets the strength even more then an overcall. For me this would be no typicall overcall nor a typical double- and no typical pass either. :) I do not know your style, or the typical expert style, mine is to overcall on marginal hands with good suits. So this hand won't qualify for me, but taste differs. We have been through this before Roland. Some players like to bid immediatley and hope they catch a raise, others like to wait until the opponent's have limited their hands, then balance and maybe catch a double. - 4 handed vs 2 handed bridge? jukmoi
Obvious double to me. I am more afraid of missing 44 ♠ than 53 ♥.
