The difference between 3♠ and 4♥ is the former puts us in a forcing pass auction and lets partner know it really is our hand. With 4♥ he is still the seaman and we are still the captain. Whether or not this knowledge actually helps is far from certain as I am unwilling to go past 4♥ and Xing everything in sight rates to be our best choice.

I can see partner acting with a 6-4 for example if we bid 3♠, and he rates to make it then so it sounds right.

While one of the AK may not cash they still won't make overtricks (I'm discounting voids which are very unlikely and very unlucky), and meanwhile partner could have a trick or two himself or even a ruff. Plus both their bids were under pressure (assuming you bid 4♥). I think not doubling is a huge error. I would even double opposite a 655321 preempt.

4♥ and double for me also, and perhaps we are getting +500 and it would not shock me to get +800 considering some of the crap people compete with. That being said, I doubt we are favorites for 5♥
