Oren Goren
I prefer cats, even though I have never owned one. It looks like dogs offer mindless and dogmatic enthusiasm and approval (but I don't mean to say they are mindless in general). I don't want anyone to feel like that, at least not until I become genuinely awesome. lol!
jdonn
What is more important to me is that I have found myself to be adamantly opposed to non-domesticated animals as pets, like monkeys, great cats, etc. why? http://english.pravda.ru/society/stories/1...106709-badger-0 (or was this linked on the forums earlier?) Reasons? A. The animals remain always dangerousB. Though captive, they remain wild. Owners forget that.C. It is inhumane treatment of a wild creatureD. Regardless of the sentimentality, it is not in the creature's best interests - although in rare instances it may be the only viable alternative.E. Bambi was fiction. A. ?B. ?C. ?D. ?E. JoAnneM
Great thread! Our cat is an orange tabby rescue cat that we adopted from the animal shelter. He was about six months old and had got himself caught up in the engine of a sheriff deputy's car. They had treated a wounded front leg and we thought that was it. When we got him home we noticed he was limping on his right hind leg. A visit to the vet the next day confirmed a fractured hip. Unfortunately it could not be repaired so she said "just remove the hip joint, he won't miss it"!! So, $800 later we took our pound kitten home missing one hip joint, with a shaved rear end, stitches, and wearing a cone around his neck so he couldn't reach the incision. Within a week he was walking without a trace of a limp, he can jump as high as a tallboy dresser, or just about anywhere he wants. The vet's only stipulation was that he become a house cat only, which was our intent anyway as we live on a busy road and had already lost two pets to it. Oh, and we named him Barney Fife (Barney for short) because of the sheriff's car. He is three years old now and a big baby who thinks he rules the roost. My favorite dog is my son's golden retriever, Peeka, a beautiful cream colored softie who loves and protects my granddaughters, and who lets them do just about anything to her. babalu1997
of course i love cats. i have many memories of my early childhood, but a most impressive one is of a brown tabby cat that had kittens in our back yard, i wanted to keep the kittens but eventually cat and kittens left. my mother never liked cats, so she got me a puppy-- the puppy was hit by bus when it ran outside after my father and i-- i remember returning home and the dog was lying on a towel. we moved a couple of months later, and we went to get another puppy from my mother's cousin-- i rememebr the date when that happened, my father called me to see the man walking on the moon-- i did not pay attention because the puppy had peed on the floor. that would make me less than 3 years old, and i can remember that. had no cats of my own till i was almost 30 years old. 2 of my runners were killed by dogs, so i keep house cats only. i am always devastated when i lose one of them, last year the vet was really worried when i lost the gray tabby to old age, he said well done i got the sick kitten from the pound. she was sick for 3 months and cost me a pretty penny, but as all cats, she has her own little story, including the fact that i had to teach her how to meow-- i thought she was mute-- her meow is strange, she is getting muscular and strong now and is almost a year old. she cries evry time she hears a car outside, hoping it is me coming back home. they are good company, people come and go, pets stay with you till they die,
y66
My wife & I have a 12 week old pup. Hard to believe how fast he's growing. He's on the raw meat and bones diet. That's probably not for everyone but definitely something to check out for dogs and cats. Just set the alarm clock for 2 AM to take him outside. It's a good thing they're so adorable at this age. blackshoe
My Dad loved dogs, wouldn't have cats in the house. He did tolerate cats in the barn, though. I had a Black Lab when I was a kid, and she was a great dog, but my college roommate was a cat lover, and I picked it up from him. I had four cats until last year - lost one to cancer and another to some unknown illness. The other two are doing fine. One's a gray Burmese, or mostly Burmese, the other a long haired calico. They're a good 15 years old now. I don't know if I dare get another kitten when they go - he'd probably outlive me by quite a bit.

peachy
Cat. If you are lucky enough to have a smart, active cat (there aren't many, I have had many cats and only one was clever), it is endless joy to have him/her around. Now, I have no pets and surprisingly enough I am happy about the freedom that a "no pets" life can offer. However, all cats and dog approach me like I am their long-lost mother or something, wherever I go. Well, I knew there was something wrong with me, LOL. Al_U_Card
cats pwn dogs at the momenthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp0yfWlVYqc Easy. They don't slobber and they poop in a nice litter box as well as usually keeping the volume down on their vocalizations. Other than indifference, what's not to like? p.s. Don't forget that, unlike Rotweilers, they don't rip your face off. :(
y66
cats pwn dogs at the moment ... Today, while out walking my dog, an attractive woman stopped her car in the middle of the road, got out, crossed the street, came over, greeted me and the dog politely, asked if she could pet my dog, gushed, squealed and hugged him non stop for 5 minutes, said thanks, got back in her car, waved goodbye and drove off. I'm not saying cats aren't cool pets. But that never happened with my cat. I didn't have a chance to ask her if she plays bridge. Probably not, if the poll is accurate. Who cares? vuroth
To paraphrase the late great Mr Adams, dog people think dogs are smarter than cats because they will do complex tricks like shaking a paw, rolling over, or fetching, in return for morsels of food, while cats refuse to. Cat people think cats are smarter than dogs for exactly the same reason. V

Oren Goren
Man's best friend Ha! Not by a long shot. In their role as mousers and ratters (as well as buggers) cats have saved millions of human lives, dogs maybe tens of thousands, if that many. oren
onoway
My son trained his cat to fetch, roll over, etc on command. I don't know why..I think it started when the cat was insisting on being places he was not supposed to be and it turned into a battle of wills.. y66
Pushkin by Marjorie Kowalski Cole The old cat sleepsin the newly arrived sun. One more springhas come his waydropping a solar bathon failing kidneys, old cat bones.I check for the rise and fall of breath. Once he stalked haresacross the yard, tracked downchicken hearts with split-lentil eyes.Fearless, disinterested, a poseur, a demideity. He and the dog are strangers stillafter years of eating side by side. I remember times of wailinginto my couch, aloneand utterly baffled by life, when suddenly a catwould be sitting on my head. Last week I pulled him snarlingfrom under a chair in Dr. Bacon's office, held him while she examined his dull coat, felt his ribs. Pressed where it hurt.Eight pounds of fur and bone and mad as hellbut "He's certainly less anxious in your lap,"she murmured, astonishing me.I had no idea. Phil
I had discussed Taz here: The Dog. As mentioned, he died last July. Life takes some strange turns. About 6 weeks later, our youngest daughter's friend, who's mom works for a local vet was looking for a family to adopt another corgi. They had purchased him from a mall pet store (reputable). Wiley. He's definitely not an alpha, so a lot more sociable around other dogs. Fred - sorry about Magic
