jocdelevat
rho open 1club and you hold J95 AQJ AQT5 AK2 what's your bid? If you bid 1d(as I did) the opener will bid 1s over now what?
pooltuna
rho open 1club and you hold J95 AQJ AQT5 AK2 what's your bid? If you bid 1d(as I did) the opener will bid 1s over now what? Your range for a 1♦ overcall is too large. You need to read up on take out doubles and incorporate a reasonable strategy to handle this type of hand. Such a strategy will normally involve starting with an X and have a NT rebid.
vuroth
I'm still uncomfortable with how wide 8-16 is for an overcall. 8-21 is just undescriptive.
neilkaz
Why would I overcall 1♦ with a 4 card suit and 21 hcp? I will often be passed out here when game is cold.
rogerclee
Double and bidding the cheapest number of NT shows about 19 to a bad 21. This is a bad 21 so I would do that.

wank
until you get to the level of expert, never overcall on 4 card suits. if you have more than around 16 or 17 points, you should normally start with a take-out double.
PhantomSac
until you get to the level of expert, never overcall on 5 card suits. if you have more than around 16 or 17 points, you should normally start with a take-out double. Presumably you meant 4 card suits.

I am not quite sure I'd advise leaving it until expert level - but certainly only overcalling 5 card suits is the place to start - and some would be reluctant anyway. Not sure I agree that this is that bad of a 21. I might even argue that it is a really good 21, contextually. Of course, that just underlines the hell out of what you said. lamford
Presumably, as we were asked for a biding plan, pass would be the bid that would bide most! It does risk going all pass, however.
P_Marlowe
Hi, X. It is not the worst idea, to have a wide range for 1 level overcalls, but 21HCP is too much, add the fact that you dont even have a 5 card suit for your 1D overcall, why would you want to overcall 1D? If 1S comes back (or what ever), I will make another X, most lilkely I will give up the next round. With kind regardsMarlowe
