spotlight7
Hi: One heart playing most systems. Playing a 4 card major system, you would bid 2Ds 'if not playing inverted raises.' The current trend is to bid with less and less values. This hand is not even that close to a pass. Regards, Robert
rogerclee
Not only would I respond 1H but if partner jump-raises to 3H I would bid game.

cherdanno
This is really an automatic 1H bid. You have only 5 hcp, but you have- an ace- an AJT-combo- in a 4-card suit, which is even- partner's suit, and- you have a singleton, while knowing you have a 4-4 fit. The hand is at least as good as your typical balanced hand with 8 hcp.
neilkaz
Passing here is a NPAB... New Partner Asking Bid. The fitting ♦ honors are very nice and no matter what pard rebids after 1♥ we are fine with it and can retreat back to ♦ if we want.
Siegmund
I am a lot happier responding on this hand than I would be on a lot of misfitting 5s.
nigel_k
I'd bid 2♦ whether playing four card majors or not. Second choice 3♦. But 1♥ is definitely ahead of pass.
aguahombre
I'd bid 2♦ whether playing four card majors or not. Second choice 3♦. But 1♥ is definitely ahead of pass. If pard opened with a 4 4 3 2 hand (4-4 in majors), 1H will probably work better than a diamond raise. No matter what strength and or length you use for 2 or 3 diamonds, those bids could work out very badly on this hand for the same reasons. gwnn
never pass!! ever ever ever ever!!!! if you feel tricky you may try 3♦ but don't don't don't!! pass
peachy
Passing would show extreme lack of judgment. 1H is automatic.

If so, the 3D (and 2D?) bidders get what they deserve.

kenrexford
1♥ for me. But, partner wouldn't have that hand, though. That's a 2NT opening (20-21), IMO. Control-rich, two 10's, not 4-3-3-3. If this was an assess-the-blame, Opener would get a few percentage points from me. I mean, passing 1♦ is weird, but 2NT seems like a batter opening, IMO. nigel_k
Was it 3-2 hearts with the DK offside? If so, the 3D (and 2D?) bidders get what they deserve. Pardon? The only difference is that those of us who raised diamonds are going to play 4♥ from the strong hand. This would normally be a good thing except this time partner happens to have 19 HCP with no tenaces.
