dartagnan9
Sitting South, opposite Azamali24, the opening bidder, vulnerable, I had a very powerful hand (23 high card points). When my partner opened 1NT I was amazed - his minimum 15 pts+my 23=38. So, naturally, I did a sextuple jump to 7NT. Between us, we had all aces, kings, queens, half the jacks and all 6 top diamonds, giving us enough winners for 16 tricks! When East doubled (on the basis of a less than powerful hand - 1 pt, but a nice long ♣ suit - errm, headed by the 10 - I'm sure it seemed a good idea at the time B)), I redoubled, and we went on to make what I think is the max score, 2980 pts. I've been at 7NT vul before, but never expect again to be there redoubled, since it's doubtful anybody would do so without an ace, or possibly a king. What was somewhat strange was that my partner didn't claim, although perhaps he wanted the pleasure of laying out 13 tricks. Does anybody know how frequently this score is attained? See link to hand below. hrothgar
Most people play a XX of 7N as SOS, asking partner to bid his longer minor...Oh wait... In any case, congratulations. I can't recall ever seeing this contract at the table. I suspect that its frequency is somewhat higher online...
Fluffy
it seems odd to force the last 3 players to pass, after all they have no decision to make B) Oh BTW I was reported a larger score of 7NT XX but down 7, the first round control partner showed happened to be not the one expected. 24 IMPs loss. Cyberyeti
I've had a larger score brought back by team mates in an auction where 1N got doubled, there was a complicated rescue sequence which culminated in them playing in a club partial redoubled with the opening leader holding 8 solid trumps. bid_em_up
I redoubled, and we went on to make what I think is the max score, 2980 pts. From the "Believe It Or Not" series, the maximum score for the declaring side is 3160 for 1N vul. xx'd making 7. This appears to be a fluke in the scoring table, since 1N not vul xx'd making 7 does not outscore the non-vul grand slam xx'd. Vulnerable redoubled undertricks are a real bummer. 7 anything vul xx'd down 13 is a whopping -7,600, while down 6 vul xx'd nets a healthy 3400. Ouch. Still a nice result for you though. :(
