gordontd
(1♣) - P - (1♥) - P(1♠) - (X) - (XX) - P X = takeout of ♠XX = support Does the final pass in this auction show a desire to defend 1S, or does it show no preference among the other suits? CamHenry
I play it as showing a desire to defend. This means that the XX is not a "get out of double free" card, as you can actually leave it in. Of course, if you believe the frequency of penalty passes in this auction is low, you could play the pass as "no preference, no values". That does sound too much like "hey, opps, partner's come into the auction when he shouldn't and you should double us to collect some money". gnasher
I'd assume that it says you don't know where to play. All the reasons for playing it this way after (1♠) dbl (rdbl) still apply. Furthermore, advancer didn't overcall 1♠, so the chance of his holding a penalty pass is reduced. Of course, if you believe the frequency of penalty passes in this auction is low, you could play the pass as "no preference, no values". That does sound too much like "hey, opps, partner's come into the auction when he shouldn't and you should double us to collect some money". Hasn't the redoubler already announced that this is the situation? Anyway, pass doesn't say either "no preference" or "no values": it says "doubt about strain". If I happened to have been dealt a 3424 8-count, I'd pass so as to ensure reaching an 8-card fit. Edit: Sorry, I hadn't noticed that the redouble was support. What a strange agreement. Anyway, I still think pass should be doubt about where to play. Edited February 22, 2010 by gnasher
paulg
As redouble shows support, I play pass as no preference and not a desire to play in 1♠ redoubled. Paul
hanp
This support redouble is very strange.
pooltuna
(1♣) - P - (1♥) - P(1♠) - (X) - (XX) - P X = takeout of ♠XX = support Does the final pass in this auction show a desire to defend 1S, or does it show no preference among the other suits? Depends on whether or not you have a "must save" meta-agreement in place. If so this is an easy pass. Of course this is not free as partner must often guess where he wants to save. Fluffy
I'd say pass is to play, and the redouble is a joke, you always have 1NT then redouble as a strain asking.
Finch
I'd say pass is to play, and the redouble is a joke, you always have 1NT then redouble as a strain asking. My general rule is that passes of redoubles are to play, but we have some 1-level exceptions. We've never discussed exactly this auction but we do play 1x dbl rdbl pass as neutral, and 1x p 1y x xx pass as neutral. The point is that you can't really want to play in 1Sxx when partner has a take-out double of 1S and you passed over 1H. What hand can you have? PhantomSac
I can't imagine not being able to overcall 1S and now being able to pass 1S X or 1S XX, so logically I would play this as neutral.

cloa513
I just want to clarifiy that it is fine for the East passing hand to have bid hearts or clubs natural. Assuming that then its no preference, surely with spades killer hand he would bid spades first time so he maybe has some crappy spades.
