He's cue-bidding, right?

I would expect partner to have some decent clubs. ie not just the ace. As I read the bidding his hand is not yet limited and if he has a strong two suiter he could still be slam seeking. Or he might just be announcing good clubs to help you decide whether to take the push over the anticipated 4S bid. He will be on lead against a spade contract so I think we can rule out lead-directing.

So I don't think you have any way of knowing whether he is trying for 6 or trying to help you decide about bidding 5, but I think he has a club suit to go with his hearts. I can control the pointed suits while he establishes his suits so I guess I will go on. Catering to the possibility that he is trying for 6, I bid 5D.

Briefly, my thinking is that if he didn't want me to do this he should have just bid 4H instead of 4C.

Agree with double. We have like no honours in partner's suits so the 5level is dangerous. The defense has good prospects too. If partner ends up having a singleton spade he might have a doubleton diamond for a ruff and we can take whatever round suit tricks too.

Well, lead directional to remind himself what to lead doesn't compute. Opener's hand is very pure with the AK of Diamonds and the A of Spades. Even the Jack of clubs has now become a useful card for offense and 3 clubs is about the most I could have. Double would be my third choice, behind 5D and Pass. Whatever 4C showed, it made this pass forcing --and if that is in doubt, then 5D is even better.

The OPPs bidding..no one preempted! 1S overcall followed by 2S support by advancer--opps have defensive values, unless the 2s bidder is a bit pyscho as too many points in the deck. But the 4s bid tells me he has something!

Partner iis making a free 2 H bid based on shape and I may have a semi-solid h suit thrown in with a new club bid at the 4 level.

Pard could have any shape, 1-5-3-4, 0-6-4-3, 1-7-1-4...or whatever...

I like X..that should tell P my H holding is not that I yi yi and I can cash diamonds..If pard now bids 5C I bid 5D, and leave 5 or 6hs up to him...if pard bids 5Hs I will have to flip a coin and probably give him 6...we HOPE he isnt bidding on x QJTxxxxx xx AKx

Opps clearly have spades! Taking my BBO pick-up partner at his word - an expert, playing SAYC - what's my bid?

More importantly, what's his 4 bid?

4 is probably a values bid (DSIP) so you can make a reasonable choice over 4. That being said "WHACK"

p bids 4c to help you judge whether to push onto 5h or not and you've got the worst possible holdings in his suits.

if you're not going to X with this, your partner might as well not bother trying to describe his hand in future

I think you exaggerate. We don't have any minor honors in spades which would be of more value in defense than in offense. Although I double myself I think a forcing pass would not be unreasonable with this hand.

Taking the push I don't understand.

Hi,

The 4C showes values, so it is not a cue bid.

To a certain extend it prepares the partnership to make the right

decision, if they bid 4S.

E.g. it tells p, that he wants to make 4H, i.e. bidding 4H without

bidding 4C could just be a "game try", so it basically sets up a

forcing pass seq. for the partnership.

Given your flat hand, you dont want to play on the 5 level, so you

make a penalty X.

With kind regards

Marlowe
