CSGibson
Pass and lead trump. Kidding, of course. 2♣ or 1♥, depends on my mood.

pooltuna
[hv=d=e&v=b&s=sk94ha85d87caq543]133|100|Scoring: MPP-1C-(1D)-XP-???[/hv] 1♥, 1♠, 2♣ are all choices since you know at least 8 of partner's cards (8M minimum) and RHO's failure to raise ♦ is somewhat indicative of partner holding 3 I would elect to play one of my 7 card fits at the 1 level. Thus 1♥
helene_t
1♥ wtp, we have a known 7-card fit which we can bid at the 1-level, and p could have more than four hearts. P will pass 2♣ with a weak 4531.
gnasher
Can partner have a weak 4531?
helene_t
why not? Isn't he just showing both majors?
gnasher
Do the 1♥ bidders think they're showing exactly three, or is it 3+? In my style, 1♥ or 1♠ would show exactly three. With four hearts, I'd bid whatever I'd have bid after the uncontested sequence 1♣-1♥.

I agree with this generally altho I have called 1M with 4 when I was at the rock bottom of an opening. 4531 I would think 1♥ instead of negative X would be acceptable as long as partner doesn't play it to deny 4♠ however with 5431 I think you have to go the negative X unless you can call GF ♥s on the next turn (i.e. after 1♠)
MFA
1♥. Three or very bad with four. Since partner is 44+ in the majors, 2♣ could be terrible.

Fluffy
bah mike I expected you to say it would be an easy problem once you knew what the double has shown :) I like 1NT
the hog
For me the x denies a 4 card Major, so I would bid 2C with my partners. Playing with an unknown I bid 1H.
jdonn
1♥. Three or very bad with four. Since partner is 44+ in the majors, 2♣ could be terrible. This is exactly how I feel. If I weren't going to bid a major I would bid 1NT anyway not 2♣. Although it's moot because I'm bidding 1♥.
mike777
1nt ok I have been convinced by posters that 1nt is better than 2c.
andy_h
I don't quite understand 1NT when we have a perfectly reasonable alternative of 1♥, which other posters have suggested shows 3♥ and rarely 4. If 1♥ must show 4 then surely it would still be the better lie? We still have lots of space to sort our trump fit out and if partner has a diamond stopper he can bid 1NT himself. This auction is different to 1♣-(1♠)-X-Pass where we sometimes have to bid 1NT without a stopper given we don't have the luxury of extra bidding space like we do here. Jlall
Yeah 1M is often 3 to me (but does not systemically show 3). Partner will advance accordingly.
kenrexford
BTW, it has always seemed to me that in any auction featuring a negative double, plus ability of Opener to bid Responder's shown suit at the one-level, that Opener should bid the normal two-level in the suit with full support but at the one-level with three-card semi-support. Barring that, 1♥ seems right.
