Here's the actual hand. (Again, feel free to not look before responding)

Bonus question: Would partner's double of 2 be a pure penalty double or just extra values for the original takeout double?

2nd Bonus question: Would our double of 2 be takeout or cooperative/optional/values?

I bid 2D the first time. Vulnerable 1NT with both opps bidding is not my cup of tea even though I have stoppers. After 2C I definitely bid it now.

I would expect partners double of 2C to be penalty-oriented, but given that he started with a takeout double of 1H, we expect it to be based on 4 nice clubs, and our hand should usually pull with a singleton if we have anywhere to go.

(Haven't looked at the full hand yet, will after I post this.)

yes p should just smack 2C.

playing double as take-out would be pointless - you've already essentially denied 4 spades. you're not going to try playing in LHO's 5cM.

anyway, when he doesn't smack it, you obviously assume he made a sensible call and bid 2D, your marked fit

I assumed 1nt:

1) shows real values in hearts

2) hints at real values in spades

3) hints at general real values.

all true. but it doesn't hint at 4-card support for one of the non-heart suits. 2D would be that hint/1S. Since the doubler cannot ELC, the double is questionable on the given hand.

I like 1NT. I think your partner might want to consider doubling 2@C. After he passes, I like your 2 bid.

But I am posting more to repeat this USEFUL HINT... when posting hands, if one post from the TRAVELLER rather than from the main myhands page, you will get a link that will always work.... For example...

http://www.bridgebase.com/tools/handviewer...CCQ%7Cmc%7C8%7C This is the same hand as posted earlier, but cut and pasted from the traveller (it has essential a lin file format, except %7 for vertical bars and %20 for spaces. When the myhand database gets it occassional purge, the link in the earlier post will be broken, this one will not be as all the infor in right there in the link.

Both are pure penalty in the sense that I would never pull either double no matter what my hand is.

1S is F I assume and double from this hand would be penalty for most. I do not think I am that anxious to bid 1N and prefer 2D. Some days partner holds Jxx in C and I see no real trick development potential in NT.

Had I bid 1NT and 2C was doubled by partner it is penalty and invites our side to dble further competition from the opps and my cannon is loaded and ready for action. I see no place for them to play even though my LHO is likely 5-5.
