Is this pass forcing?

Recommended Posts

It's not forcing as standard.

However, I'd quite like to play it as forcing. We're known to have the balance of the points and we've just contracted to play at the four level with the expectation of making.

Opposite a non-forcing pass, I'd pass, having bid my hand already.

I think you can argue it should be forcing, but I wouldn't assume it were so. There are other situations where the partnership's minimum values are opening bid + response + one player has something more than that where it is far from absurd to play pass as forcing at this level.

4S makes, 5D is a good sacrifice. I agree that East has shown his hand already. Perhaps West should have taken some action over 4S. Or perhaps its just unlucky that they make 4S.

This is kind of why I don't understand why people are so passionate about their forcing pass preferences, as though any other way is ridiculous. Here we have a perfectly normal hand with nothing special about it where if pass is not forcing you go -420 instead of -100. I still don't think it would be ridiculous to include agreements where a pass here is forcing. Although I still have to admit it would not have been for me.
