Now what

Recommended Posts

Problem I had this weekend. It was the 3rd time we played together.

You hold:

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=skxxhxxdakjtxxcxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]

The auction starts:

1 - pass - 1 - 1

2 - pass - 3 - pass

3NT - pass - ???

What do you do now? If you don't pass, what do you expect partner to do?

To me 2 spade had shown 6-5 and is gameforcing. So I had bid 3 Spade and see what happens.

But obviously you are on a different wavelength and partner has just 4 spades.

I would gamble pass because this may be our best spot and we have no tools to find out the best strain anyway. It seems to be that many of my HCPS are wasted.

Partner has Clubs, spades and a heart stop? No room for any diamonds and if we are missing both minor suit queens, 3nt is in severe danger.

I'm giving up on slam opposite expected diamond shortage and pick 4 spades on the moyse as the best game. If partner carries on, 6 spades should be far from hopeless. AQJ10, Ax, x, AKJxxx in pards hand might even make 7.

I agree with many who have already stated that 3, not 3, was the correct bid on the previous round.

Having bid 3, you have no choice but to pass now.

Given that 3D instead of 3H should have been bid:

If Opener bids 3NT/3D:

1) Is 4S now a quantitative move toward slam checking back for a 5-3 fit?

2) If So, would you do it?

For the reasons ggwhiz points out, you might bid 4S anyway and not really care whether partner continues on or not.
