Recent Statistics for Forum

I was just checking our most recent posting statistics. The top two online bridge forums are this one, and rec.games.bridge. We started this forum in Feb 2003, rec.games.bridge started Dec 1986.

Post for:----- BB online --- rec.games.bridge

Nov 2009 ---- 7419 --------- 2744

Dec 2009 ---- 7529 --------- 2880

Jan 2010 ----- 9994 --------- 2733

Total post on sites...

Rec.games.bridge.....432,526

BBO Forum..............431,590

It is worth noting, rec.games.bridge has thousands and thousands of non-bridge post like:

Xbox 360 Repair Guide Review,

Lauched New PC Game Demo The Legend of Vraz,

Of course, we started "water cooler" forum a few years back, so we have thousands of those as well....

I think by the end of Feb we will probably pass rec.games.bridge in total post (example, so far in Feb, we already have 2095 post compared to 533 on rec.games.bridge, and the difference in total post is only 936 post).

Although this is interesting, I don't think that the number of posts matters much, as long as there are enough participants to keep a conversation going. Quality is what matters. IMO BBO comfortably outscores RGB in this area.

Technically, of course, it's a retrograde step. A newsgroup is a much better medium for discussion than a web-based forum, because it allows proper threading.

I think you need to use a news server that filters out the spam, I hardly ever see those messages in r.g.b.

And to keep things fair, what percentage of BBO Forum postings are in the Water Cooler?

I am not sure about how many post in the water cooler. The stats thing I have will tell me how many THREADS or POST are in any forum. The only thing it shows for individual forums is topic views (click on a topic it creates a view). Here are the forums and the number of "views" each has gotten (I have removed a few private forums from this list). The total of all forums is 9,316,251 so watercooler being the fifth most popular (and one of the "newer" categories) must have a significant number of post, if we equate views with total post, this would be about 8% of the total.

In addition to watercooler, there is a hidden yellow forum and another one, each with about 30 people or so have access. There are not many post there (compared to other forums), but I am certain the stat software counts those as well.

I did acknowledge in the first post that we have thousands of off-topic post in the watercooler... I simply gave the last two post in each because this was when I first noticed we passed their total (this morning I think the difference was something like 39 post).

I also do not know if deleted post from this forum are counted in the total, before we required game site registration to register here, there were a number of post similar to the ones quoted for the r.g.b site that had to be deleted, and of course, we occassionally have to delete post by normal members. Of course, it seems like it takes an act of congress to get post deleted from rec.games.bridge (and I don't know if post that "expire" are counted in their total).

Views have nothing to do with posts.

In the German forum are 68 posts, that have been viewed 1926 times.

1926/68 = 17.5 views per post....

for full forum

9,316,251/433083 = 21.5 views per post...

So it seems there is somewhat of a relationship. Somewhere around 20 or so views per post. that is the more post you have in forum, the more views there will be.... :)

They are definitely related but I think the corrolation runs both ways.

The more people will post, the more people will read posts.

Probably also worth noting that there are very few "LOL" and "WTP" posts in rgb.
