south made a gross overbid with 5, overcalling with this trash should be enough overbid for anyone

OK, agree it's a shaky overcall. But south did rebid 4 denying any further interest. North bid 4 anyway so south's 5 is pretty much mandatory. After all, north will sign off in 5 with no club control ... oops.

200% north.

North denies a club control so 100% blame to South.

Yeah... and since it is Sunday, I won't use caps for wtp.

Wasn't it South who overcalled and cued 5?

Missread who was in what seat... a big oops here.

The blame is mostly North's since while South's OC is agressive, he did rebid 4 denying further interest.

I guess I was alone in thinking that south did not deny a club control by bidding 5D.

Anyway sorry to disappoint, I was neither north nor south, though they are a good pair.

I also don't think South denied a club control in principle when he bid 5D, but given that North knows that the diamond cue is a second round control, North knows that South can't have much in clubs.

But I do also think South overbid when he bid 5D, he has a pile of rubbish and should sign off as fast as possible. It's hard to blame North simply for driving slam opposite the initial overall.

Anyway, perhaps East had singleton CK or CA and it made on a diamond lead.

What is wrong with south cuebidding? He is already limited by doing nothing over 4 and he is not increasing the level that is being forced to. And despite being very minimum south's hand has some very useful features for slam. If both north's queens were a club honor he would want just a little cooperation to bid slam.

I would have thought that if all North wanted was a diamond control for slam, he'd have jumped to 5H earlier in the auction; South has nothing good about his hand other than the diamond control so I think he's wrong to cooperate.

South also has the ace of spades, which is a valuable card opposite North's 4 cue. I think it's ok to cue a second-round diamond control at the 5-level when you have an unshowable and working first-round control (usually the trump ace). Also, I believe South should cue a club control over a diamond control because if North only needed a diamond control for slam, North could have asked for it by raising 4 to 5. So count me in the camp that says 5 implies no club control.
