Mind you, it also makes their constructive bidding harder. I play intermediate preempts, and it makes our constructive bidding easier, not harder. Now 1S-1N-2S is stronger (15-18, or playing stregth equivelent), and 1S-1N-3S is game forcing. It also means that there are no fake jump shifts, making that a bit easier as well. Indeed, the tradeoff of intermediate bids is that you can't use weak bids to preempt at the 2 level - you either have to preempt at the 3 level, bite your tongue, or play multi if you're allowed.
