rogerclee
Pretty clear pass IMO, it is a huge long term loser to pretend these things are just weak 2's.

PhantomSac
Pass, I don't find it clear at all though. I would def be bidding if we were say, red/white, but white/red there just isn't nearly as much reason to stretch.
655321
2NT, maybe this is not great but I know I would bid it at the table. I don't think double and 3♥ are really on the menu at all.
PhantomSac
Pretty clear pass IMO, it is a huge long term loser to pretend these things are just weak 2's. I mean most people would overcall 1N if they opened 1S showing 12-21 with 5+spades. Sure it's a level lower so that isn't a great analogy, but my point is just that if you bid it's not that you're pretending they have a weak 2, you're just bidding because you think you have to bid. gwnn
torn between pass and 2NT, my mind was made up by the poll choices. I am not going to vote for a public confession of my chickenitude.
the hog
Pass and this is pretty clear. The hand is simply not good enough to bid at the 2 level.

billw55
Comparing the votes and comments, I guess "bok bok bok" must mean pass, although I am at a loss as to why.
mikegill
Yes, I think "buck buck brawwwwwwwk" would have probably got the point across more clearly.
jjbrr
I'd pass this. But what do you bid if partner bids 5♣ over their blackwood?

jdonn
I think pass is clear, since there could be game but getting in trouble seems much more likely. I have seen this kind of opening work well over the years for people largely because their opponents stretch to overcall and get in trouble. awm
I'd bid 2NT. This kind of opening bid is just extremely effective when it comes up and one has to accept occasional losses. As to bidding versus passing, I would certainly bid over a 1♠ opening. In this sequence my opponents are weaker (opener has only the bottom end of a one-bid) and also more likely to have a fit (six-card suit more likely to find a fit than five-card suit). I'm one-level higher, but I'm NV so this only really costs me when they double and we don't have a fit and I go down multiple tricks. I'm not going to let their intermediate two talk me out of a game contract.
Fluffy
I would bid 2NT and not be happy about it, its an overbid but I wanna act. after passing I would reopen with 4♥ partner rates to have fit and they rate not to let me play it anyway. jdonn
Um Fluffy aren't they almost sure to let you play it?? People don't bid 3♠ if they are willing to bid 4♠ later...
Fluffy
not in my country, but you probably have a point, not a big problem since I wasn't ver sure if I was worth a double of 4♠ or not
aguahombre
Anyone for Unusual 2NT over this range, also leading to a pass with this hand?
gwnn
2NT unusual no way, you will have all those chubby 16 counts and now you will have to wait for 18 to be able to bid? (doubling on AQx and 10 more hcp is not very effective, you will face the same dillema later) <_< and besides even though they "promise 10" they don't always have 10, at least not if they are using this bid cleverly. I am not implying they are mendacious but simply upgrading some normal looking 9 counts because they think it will work out better.
Apollo81
I should really remember to post the result when I post a problem. I held this hand and passed at the table, and I didn't think it was clear. LHO raised to 3♠ passed back to me, and I passed again. I don't remember how 3♠ did (down 1 I'm guessing), but we were cold for 3NT -- partner had a 9 count or so.
whereagles
pass 'coz you have long spades. if pard has something, he'll reopen due to his short spades
