I scramble.

I can construct too many hands where 2 makes. And I am not afraid that they can double so easily. East did not redouble and he does not know that his partner has his high cards outside spades. So he can count for at most one trick from partner and needs four in his own hand to double.

Surely possible. But with such a hand 2 X is a disaster too.

2 shows 7-10. They have a fertilizer available for the really crappy hands.

well it is either pass or 3. Having seen some of the TOX advocated here over 2 level preempts it is not going to be pretty. I try 3 it will be harder for RHO to X after his partner's preempt.

I have suffered enough 2x= or +1 on hands like this to not pass. Every lead up to dummy will work, and the trump finesse through me is marked. So we are getting two trumps on defense, and ... four side suit tricks? I doubt it.

I choose 3 as the least of evils. -200 beats -470. Heck, -500 beats -570.

I swear on my life that I would have truly believed this would be unanimous for pass, in fact I was going to ask mfa why he posted it.

I like the 2NT scrambling "I play whatever convention helps me most on the current hand even if no one plays it" convention.

Ok-ok, maybe the hand was more curious than it was difficult. I wanted to see if somebody would 'chicken out' in here. A few did.

2 is maybe a favourite to make, but still it must be best to pass imo. A somewhat unusual situation.

2X was the final contract at 4 out of 12 tables, but declarer only went down at our table.

Does anyone have a guess as to what might have happened at the other three tables in 2X where declarer took 8 tricks?

Here it went

K to the ace.

to Q and ace.

to the 9.

through.

2 club tricks, 1 heart trick and there was no trump coup at the end.

Interesting, the defense did get three trumps after all.

Out of curiosity, what was north's plan if south bid 3? For example trade a spade from south's hand with a diamond spot from east's?

Good hand for 2NT scrambling, they can't really double 3 to get their 500 or 800 :)

So I hate to be weird or anything, and not saying I wouldn't (well I definitely wouldn't vul) but is there anything about west's balanced defensive hand with a bad suit that screams 'preempt'?

you don't need a hand that screams preempt to preempt. you just check which category fits your hand best. especially in a strong pass system it's not very easy not to preempt on some of these hands.

anyway, even though I agree that it's not the best preempt in the world but favorable I would definitely bid 2 from W, whatever system I'm playing.

he wanted to use his license to steal before the expiration date passed :)

Maybe west can start hearts at trick three, to pitch clubs.

Also north might have started a trump, many players consider that mandatory after a penalty pass.
