The dealer on your right opens 1 playing SAYC and showing at least 3 cards in the suit. 2NT would be + and 3 (or 4) pre-emptive in 's. Do you?

Its an obv 2NT opening for me, but I don't play standard 2s with regular partners. If I was playing something more standard I might well have a go - depends on what partner I had a bit - some people get terribly upset about one suit preempts that are playable in 2 suits - but in this case the other isn't a major.

Er - just read the whole of the post - it helps doesn't it - um - if the opening was 1 then I'd probably keep my powder dry for now - the club suit is not that great and the hand could easily be a misfit all round.

I will preempt in first seat, but over a 1 opening I will pass.

My preempts are meant to keep opps from finding a good contract.

I don't think opps have a good contract, and I don't think we have one either.

Since RHO opend 1 it's unlikely he has a 5-card major. More likely he has 4441 or 4432 shape. It could be that opps don't have a fit at all, and if they have a major fit, there s a good chance the will find a bad break.

This would indicate that we have no fit too and we might find a bad break.
