Tomorrow is the big day! Apple introduces its new 10" tablet that will have both an OS and use Apps. Even my daughter-in-law won't tell me the final name, but she does tell me it's fantastic. So, will I be able to sit in the car and play BBO tournies via 3G or "Whispernet" while tooling down the road? (as a passenger of course) The screen is certainly going to be large enough and think of the potential, people being able to play wherever they are. Only the addicted would understand.

Have your hopes become reality? It sounded to me like a super charged iTouch rather than a scaled down notebook. I don't pretend to know about the details, but didn't read anything about the Apple OS being part of the iPad (which would be required to play bridge at BBO, right?). What's the scoop?

My point was that you should have continued that thread, not started a new one.

 

I just posted a comment in that thread similar to what Uday wrote here. Without Flash, it will require an entirely new app to be written from the ground up.

For what it is worth, I think there is an iphone app that allows you to kibitz bbo tables (at least I recall reading that). So while you can't play, perhaps you can kibitz with this thing. Without Flash, I am not interested in the new iPad.....

I think I might consider buying this one, because it fits my needs much more than an iPhone. I use my phone basically only as a phone and don't need internet access on my phone on such a tiny screen.

 

Still depends on what you can do with it, of course.

Purely a control thing. If it supported FLASH people could do flash applications that would work without needing to go through the Apple approval process. But Apple wants full control of everything and wants to reject lot of applications and can't do that if there is a full language that people can program in.

Mobile Phone users are used to pay for anything.

Internet user are used to get everything for free.

 

With that thing you will need to buy an applications and make subscriptions and probably buy it with some sort on mobile Internet contract.

So Apple, Internet provider and content provider can make money. And I assume that similar to the Iphone Apple will get a share of all payments.

 

If there is a flash player, I would be possible to bypass the application restrictions and deliver content without involving Apple. If a Content provider could do that, he could make a cheaper offer, destroying the business model.

 

Of cause this would also have security issues.

The basic iPad comes with Wi-Fi capability that does not require a subscription. Anywhere there is available wi-fi you can connect. I upgrade models require subscriptions for 3G. I know nothing about the flash situation but I have an iPhone and have downloaded lots of free apps. Shame on Apple, and Microsoft for that matter, for wanting to make money. :)

I'm not sure where Microsoft comes in there. Flash is an Adobe technology that is a closed technology that is a de facto standard on the web (I.e., it isn't like HTML, CSS, JS, XML and other open standards, but it is still extremely widely used). Apple controls the iPad stack and all the apps. I'm a fan of my Kindle, but that is an Amazon technology with some closed Amazon technologies. Microsoft isn't really a player in this thread (unless you are comparing a tablet PC [been around for the past 8 years or so] with the iPad. If you do that you'll find the table PC is far more powerful and flexible [it is a full computer] but also far more bulky and doesn't have the Apple design sense.)

Actually I was just comparing similar "attacks" on Microsoft that have been in the post in this thread about Apple. Maybe not by people here, or even in this Forum, but Microsoft is a favorite target, just like Apple.

 

I have a Kindle, too, so I am not selling the iPad. My only interest was iPad and BBO.
