1D:2D 3H:3D

No doubt I would bid 3NT like, I guess, everyone else. But consider an alternative auction 1D-2D-3C-3D-3H. It's at least possible that this hand will make 5 or 6 diamonds while the opponents can take the first five spades in NT. Since Qx in spades is adequate I guess I wouldn't push this approach here but as a general tool when holding club and heart stops, it seems not totally nuts.

Perhaps the fact that responder did not bid 3 over 2 should rule out a stiff spade but with minimal values for his 2 bid he might wish to show that feature first.

But at the table I probably bid an unimaginative 3NT directly over 2. 18-19, more or less balanced, that's what I have.

3N

This may be the book bid but since we are already in a gf auction do I really want to shut partner out of the auction so soon?

I am not trying to shut them out. I am making the most descriptive call I can....Okay I am dumping the captaincy of the hand on them so I can win the post mortem B)

Wouldn't you make the same 3NT rebid with 4432 18-19? Seems like with AQxx of diamonds you should not dismiss slam possibilities or the likelihood that diamonds will play better than notrump.

I play the direct 3NT as 18-19 with 3 cards in the minor, so if it's diamonds it's specifically 4432. When you only have a 3 card suit but you have slam interest you want to get that information across.

I don't see what the problem is on the given hand, 3NT now. Partner is only invitational so slam is unlikely. And of course I don't want to miss 3NT but I'm not bidding 3 with AK of clubs.
