current best players

Recommended Posts

eveyone has his favorite... but try to be objective and name the 10 top players in the world, in your opinion... use whatever criteria you want, but it seems to me that if one is naming a current list, one should use results in international play over the last 5 years.. so it might be a good idea to give your reasons for your choices, if you have any :)

I can't imagine a top 10 list lacking Bocchi. I have to think about the other 9; certainly Meckstroth and Hamman, probably Rodwell. Helgemo? Not so sure of anymore.

I'd rather see a list of the top 5 partnerships, rather than the top 10 players anyway.

2 Jeff MECKSTROTH U.S.A. 4071 44.25 WGM

3 Eric RODWELL U.S.A. 3750 43.75 WGM

4 Lorenzo LAURIA Italy 3172 27.5 WGM

5 Giorgio DUBOIN Italy 3093 18 WGM

6 Alfredo VERSACE Italy 3043 22 WGM

7 Lew STANSBY U.S.A. 2822 35.5 WGM

8 Norberto BOCCHI Italy 2778 18 WGM

9 Chip MARTEL U.S.A. 2739 34.5 WGM

10 Gabriel CHAGAS Brazil 2738 40.5 WGM

Does not seem too far off the truth.

what makes hamman's position that much more impressive (to me, anyway) is the fact that, aside from chagas, he is the only one whose regular partner isn't in the top 10... in other words, his ranking and accomplishments don't seem to be as dependent upon his partner

it's true that a lot of times a person's rating depends upon who's on his team, which accounts for some very fine players not making that list (the country they're from may not have as many quality pairs), but it's also true that hamman is one of the greatest of all time, using objective criteria

In no particular order:

Cesary Balicki (Poland)

Giorgio Duboin (Italy)

Justin Hackett (Eng)

Geir Helgemo (Norway)

Lorenzo Lauria (Italy)

Jeff Meckstroth (USA)

Michel Perron (France)

Eric Rodwell (USA)

Michael Rosenberg (USA)

Jacek Pszcola (Pol)

Add to this the following who just missed: Norberto Bocchi, Mike Passell, Stansby, Martel, Chagas, maybe Chemla.

Up and comers

Andreas Gloyer, Petrunin, Gromov, Stelio and Furio DiBello.

I don't think any of the British players are quite top 10 in the world

I and many others think Justin is. Jason is close behind. Their international results, and I am not just talking about the Eng team, have been excellent over the past 4 years.
