Bermudo Bowl 2011

to quote from the site, www.bridge.nl , via translation:

"Probably the World Cup will be held in the second half of October 2011, the location is not known", that is the location in the Netherlands is not known yet, but it will be there.

I am rather surprised a hotel and venue are not booked yet. 18 months is a very short lead time. These places are booked years in advance.

Perhaps with the worldwide recession space is opening up.

So far I am able to understand dutch...the final decision to play BB 2011 in Netherlands has been made yesterday (friday)...so there was no time for any further preparations....anyway I dont think the "ACBL-practice">>>to book all years in advance is needed in Europe generally.

I assume this means that the Netherlands are assured of a spot in the BB (and VC) in 2011.

Does that mean that only 5 other spots are left for European teams (Qualifying from the Europeans in 2010) , or the hosts have a reserved place and 6 OTHER teams (including the 7th placed , assuming Netherlands team is in top 6) will qualify?

According to the General Conditions of the Contest, Appendix 7...the host country may send a team to all 3 championships ex-quota of the zonal distribution.

It means 7 spots for Europe...same like in Estoril 2005.

There is another regulation...

In the event that the above allocation result in an odd number of teams for either or both the BB/VC/d'OSB, Zone 1 may send an additional team to create an even number of teams.

Does it mean there is a chance for the 8th spot for Europe?

An excellent choice, the bridge infrastructure is great and you will get LOTS of specs.

Hup Holland :)

The host spot does not count for the number of places for other teams, but the 5-or-6 for Europe depends on results of other zones in things like Olympiad I think.

There is a reason ACBL books their NABC's so far in advance. At a meeting with ACBL in planning the upcoming Reno NABC I was told that there are 15 suitable venues in the US and Canada for holding NABC's. That's not many to choose from.

Define "suitable venue" please.

I can easily come up with around 30 cities that would certainly be capable of hosting an NABC. I'm sure there are more.

Does any of them have a stable internet connection, and are the rates reasonable? Does anyone check before they book? They may all have posh hotels, but I seem to remember that internet connections have been pretty poor.

How high a priority is that for the ACBL?

If there were really only 15 suitable NABC venues, we would be on a 5 year cycle, rotating among those same 15 locations. In actuality, the cycle is more like 7-8 years for the cities that are used in every cycle, and they fill out the cycles with cities that they only go to every 10-20 years.

There are lots of considerations. For instance, NYC certainly has the capacity and infrastructure, but we rarely go there because it's more expensive than just about any other venue.
