Please give examples of the weakest hands where you would be willing to sit for the double.

If they haven't redoubled, 1NTx is likely to be as good anywhere else.

 

With a five card suit, I'd remove with Kxxxx xxx Jxx xx, but sit with anything more.

Eh. These questions are impossible to answer.

 

The answer, unless you've agreed otherwise, is that weak hands pull, and hands that have some defense sit.

 

Weak is a relative term and depends on many things like how weak partner can be to double their strong NTs. It also depends on things like seat, color, scoring, who the opponents are, etc, etc.

 

Edit: You say vul vs not. Does that change how partner doubles?

IMO, Penalty Double and Equal-Hand Double are not the same. Penalty Dbl is left in routinely, with nearly no exceptions.

Agree 100%. Don't pull with balanced hands ever at IMPS.

 

Maybe if it's matchpoints and you're NV, -180/-380 isn't good and they could let you off the hook if you bid. But normally you should pass.

I admit with the 3334 yarbs everyone is offering, I would bid 2♣. They haven't redoubled yet so subsequent doubles won't be penalty, and partner won't bid anymore.

I would sit with any zero point hand without a 5 card suit, on the basis that 1NTx is probably as good as anything.

 

If I have a 5 card suit and a terrible hand, I can run in the hope that it will work out OK.

 

I will usually sit for the double with an unbalanced hand of about 5+ HCP which does not offer a chance of game in a suit contract. However, if I have a long suit and between 4-8 HCP I may run because the opponents may have 7 tricks and we may have 8 tricks in our suit.

 

The hands where the high cards rate to be split 20-20 between the two sides are the most treacherous, and involve more judgment. I would have to see my hand before making a decision.

Last weekend I opened 1NT (14-16) holding Axx Jx AQJ9xx Qx. LHO doubled for penalties and when the smoke cleared I was defending 2DX, YUMMY!
