Gerben42
Tonight, I think I have proven that there is no higher power. How else can it be explained that my horrible deeds went unpunished? (I am sorry if this subject line upsets you - and please don't start any religious discussion in the bridge area - thanks) Still I want to clear my conscience and confess my sins to the community. Playing against a guy with no name and a lost viking, my partner agreed stone-age Precision with me and opens 1NT (12 to 15). I find myself with the following collection: [hv=d=w&v=n&s=s976h8dk2cakqjt62]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Uncertain how to deal with the situation, I commit the 8th sin that was even too horrible to be ever written down and apply the convention of G. This of course moved all spectators into shock. Partner bid 4♠ and I concluded with 6♣, figuring I would have 10 top tricks from the 8 known HCP and perhaps 2 more of the 5 unknown. Partner delivers a good hand: [hv=d=w&v=n&s=s976h8dk2cakqjt62]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Only one little problem: The lead is ♠K... After some deliberations I see no other plan than to duck the first trick. Our lost viking now thinks I am rectifying the count for a squeeze and breaks my communication with... a ♦. And so it happened! The abominable convention of G chalks up 12 IMPs. Surely a bridge-loving deity would have punished me? Still, I need more proof. Next time, I will push my luck with the forbidden coup of F!
rogerclee
Um, you ducked trick one?
Gerben42
Yes, I was pushing my luck, wasn't I? I think I was in shock... Given that I had a 100% line...

Sorry, didn't mean that as a knock at you, I was really curious if there was a typo.
Gerben42
I posted it even though I know I botched the hand, I can take it. I apologize for any bladder movements caused by watching me play.
kenrexford
I don't get it. I like the duck of trick one. Where's the 100% line if I don't?
quiddity
discard H on diamonds and lead towards SJ. not quite 100%, but a bit better than ducking...
Codo
God has humour- he gifted us the Dutch. Nice story.
gnasher
I think you misplayed it twice. Even if you weren't playing ruffing rules, the contract would still be makeable as long as LHO had four diamonds: just win trick 1 and cash all the clubs, squeezing him out of all his hearts. It would have been even more fun if declarer's hand had been xx Kx Kx AKQJxxx. Then you could catch either opponent with four diamonds - still a simple invisible squeeze, but played as double. Cyberyeti
When I saw the start of the thread and the hand I assumed you'd used Ghestem, then I read the auction :)
Siegmund
And here I thought the little old ladies in my bridge club who think 1NT-pass-4NT is ace-asking and 1NT-pass-5NT invites six were the only ones who thought "the convention of G" was a sin. But no, you've proven nothing about God; there's no telling what opening leader was being punished for.
