hi all have heard that transfers

in to 5+ card suits

is gaining in popularity. wondered

on peoples

thoghts on the subject with

everyone re opening x

and tnt for 9 at three level

I can see there is a lot

of merit in this.

e.g. 1s 2d overcall.

then x becomes 5h

2h becomes 4(3) h

equivelent of a t/o x

or 1h 2c overcall

x = 5d

2d = 5s or possible 4+ s t/o

higher level auctions are best

handled and general merit

In general, transfers work best when the last bid was clubs. For example, transfers work well after (1)-2 and after 1-(2). When the last bid was made by an opponent, this also allows you to retain the valuable negative double and use the diamond bid as a transfer. For example, if you otherwise play transfer advances, you can easily play transfers on in auctions like (1)-1-(2) (double = negative, diamonds/hearts = transfer), but transfers don't work well in (1)-1-(2). I've also heard that some people play transfers effectively after 1-(3).

My big like is ONE SCHEME.

No need for "is this bid forcing in this auction?" No need for gimmick conventions to get my suit in.

Keep signoff xfers "I must play this suit."

Keep 2-bid raises: xfer then raise is help suit which would be unshowable.

Have xfer raise for better DT than raise or jump raise.

Have control xfer for slam try Q-bid next.

Maybe the double gets loaded with not neg-X cases. A small price.

How does it fare compared to negative free bids?

I suppose the advantage here is that it gives responder one more bite at the apple, i.e., instead of NFBs, where the auction might go:

1 - (2) - 2* (* = not forcing)

1 - (2) - X* (* = mostly negative, could be some GF hand)

you now have

1 - (2) - X* (* = transfer to , sign off or invite)

and

1 - (2) - 2* (* = 4)

I am guessing that the 2 isn't forcing, right?
