I pretty much agree with this. Certainly Dbl wtp and pass could work and the rest is terrible.

At one point in time the add. high card strength is enough compensation for the

missing shape.

It is a matter of agreement, what add. power you need, but 16HCP is certainly

enough for the bid.

Good golly molly I have a t/o dble, not pretty but perhaps the little extra I deliver in hcp will prevent partner from going down. 2C looks like an option from alice in wonderland.

I would definitely double...some people don't like it with a 4333 and only 3 hearts but you can't afford to pass in my opinion. 1NT would be my clear second choice and I wouldn't ever do anything else..

We wouldn't want a little thing like not having a spade stopper get in the way of our routine 1NT bid.

 

While I certainly understand the problem with the handling of this hand, the idea of making a direct 1NT overcall with only a partial stopper in the opponent's suit is frightening. If there is one thing that partner counts on above all else when you make a 1NT overcall is that you have strength in the opponent's suit. Otherwise, constructive bidding becomes nearly impossible.

I agree X but I thought a few more people would lean towards pass or (gulp) 1NT. Obviously at the table I went down the rabbit hole but that's what happens when you... put a spade with your clubs... (no rational defense for my actions except not playing a very competitive game)
