you pass, LHO opens 1, partner doubles and RHO raises to 3 which is alerted as preempt[/hv]

What is the meaning of double in your system here?

Is this double M. Bergens thrump double?

I'll simply bid 4 as South, surely raised to 5 by North. A fine contract.

2 out of 3 finesses is 50%, so no problem in not bidding 6.

What double is, is a question of partnership agreement.

I would guess the "classic" meaning would be take-out with 3 spades.

I play the double as; "Exactly 4 spades, and will not play in spades if it is a 4-3 fit". This, among with other gadgets, gives partner complete freedom to double with only three spades.

Furthermore, a 3-bid in these situations strongly indicate a five-card-suit, thus helping the doubler in his judgement, if he contemplates a raise.

I would simply bid 4C over 3H, which North will raise to game.

It's not relevant to this hand, but the meaning of double has been discussed at great length on these forums many times. I happen to play it as showing (usually) two places to play i.e. does not guarantee or deny spades.

At the table I would probably pass altho X is a possiblilty depending on agreements. Looking at all 4 hands I bid 4 but I need rose colored glasses to see the other 3 hands. :)

6 needs three out of three finesses, and is therefore awful. 5 needs two out of three finesses, two of them through the opening bidder, so 5 is the right spot.

Like everyone else, I'd bid 4 with the South hand and raise to 5 with the North hand.
