Hanoi5
White vs red, dealer passes, you hold: ♠KT872♥KQ8♦K73♣85 What's you call? Why?
TimG
I pass because my hand isn't very good.
Jlall
I mean, absolutely depends on what my partner expects for an opening bid obviously. If this question is meant to ask "Do you think playing a style where this is an opening bid is a good idea in a standardish system" I would say it probably doesn't matter much at imps, but it's definitely a good idea in MP. If this question is meant to ask "Do you open in a pickup partnership playing a standardish system?" I would say partner would not expect me to open this light since that is not standard, so I would pass at imps, but I would still open at MP because I think the gains outweigh the risks involved with misleading partner. Siegmund
In my non-Drury-playing partnerships this is a semi-mandatory opening, because we're going to have a rebid problem if we pass and partner opens 1♥. (If you do play Drury, there is a similar set of marginal hands with long clubs that open to avoid a rebid problem.) Otherwise, looks optional and very borderline to me. If you do open make sure you've chosen your rebid after 1♠-2♣ and 1♠-2♦. If I am playing Drury I think I pass even at MPs.
gwnn
I would have opened as dealer w/r for nuisance. I wouldn't open like this, ty. edit: just to clarify, I don't only open it in 1st seat and w/r. I'm sure I'd open it in other seats too but mainly when I'm NV. Vampyr
I would open this with my favourite partner, because we open 1NT 11-14 NV. We could open 1S, I suppose, but we must open something. Again, it depends on what my agreements are.
Fluffy
partnership style issue, in second position I don't open this crap.
pooltuna
White vs red, dealer passes, you hold: ♠KT872♥KQ8♦K73♣85 What's you call? Why? ...on who I am playing with and whether the system is built to handle an opening. IMO I don't think I can open this hand using any 2/1 system. mike777
sure.....again as others said....if that is our agreement, npp. I could even have a bit worse at this vul. KxxxKJxxKxxxx
dake50
What's wrong with leaving this hand to respond to partner's opener or delayed/reopening 2S? I see nothing.
hotShot
This depends on the partnership agreements about openings in 2nd seat and the corresponding agreements for openings in 4th seat. If it's agreed that 1♠ can be a weak opening, I prefer that.
hotShot
What's wrong with leaving this hand to respond to partner's opener or delayed/reopening 2S? I see nothing. If you don't mind the obvious 3 reasons: - Your 1♠ bid is quite preemptive and forces your LHO to risk an overcall on the 2 level opposite a passed partner. - Partner might not open in 4th seat without a spade length. Since you have 5 ♠ he's less likely to have ♠ length. - Opps might preempt aggressively in 3rd seat keeping your partner and you from entering the bidding. P_Marlowe
Hi, To open or not is first of all a systemic and a partnership agreement think. We dont open such a hand. The reason being, that my partner found out, that sub min strength openings dontwork well opposite me, ...,but if you want a more serious argument, although this is also an important point, which does not get mentioned often: If you open 1S, you dont have a sensible rebid. If you happen to play a weak NT with 11-14, and dont mind to have a 5 card major, when you open 1NT, than I would say, go ahead. With kind regardsMarlowe
jdonn
I would never open in 1st or 2nd seat playing a standard system. But I'm old and a wimp.

Cyberyeti
If I open this, it would have to be with a 12-14 1N, and I don't like the fact that it's aceless and the intermediates while good are not stellar. Pass for me.
