I have no idea, 4 spades followed by?????  We probably make 7 clubs and I'll probably end in 6 hearts but I'm not chancing a negative double that goes float.

Hidden:

Negative double will certainly go float. It will not be a good result for your side on this particular hand.

Yeah this is a common situation where the obvious thing to do is reverse the suit orders to enable yourself to be able to show a suit and be able to bid again. In this case 4D showing hearts makes a lot of sense.

Barring that you just kinda guess something. I would try 5N

the only scientific bid possible is 4, it will be great if partner supports, bids clubs or bids hearts, if he bids NT it will suck but maybe we can try 5 over that as pick a slam.

That's what I'd do on a non serious bridge table, but if I really care of missinderstanding, 4 followed by 6.

5N followed by 6 to show reds....I am never going to reach the grand...unless partner has something like Ax xxxx Kx AKQxx in which case he can tell that my hand must deliver no losers, in order to force to slam in the reds.

Preempts work.

BTW, I love the idea of reversing the reds over 3.

I can see problems if we extend this switch idea to too many situations, but, here, it is (nearly) perfect.

Curious how you would bid something like --- KQJxxx AQJxxx x

I'm not sure I see the point, tho

If 4N is keycard for clubs (maybe a big if) and we haven't switched the reds, neither the OP hand or the hand you suggest can safely bid 4, nor can they bid 5n and pass 6. I mean, given that our void spade leaves open the possibility of a 4=2=3=4 weak notrump hand for partner, passing clubs over 5N is a big position.

And, yes, opposite the hand I suggested for partner to bid grand, I will look silly if they double 7...(or not)

My point was that the bolded part was false...which you have confirmed yourself.

So many bids with a chance to sew such confusion.

I bid 5S because I think it is a cool bid and no matter what happens I can blame partner for being unable to figure out what it meant. Kind of a no-lose (for me) slam force.

yes, the blame shifting cue. I love it.

I'll hide the results, for those wondering:

I had KQxx 9xxx K AKxx. 7 was cold. It's not an easy hand over any 5 or 5NT bid, i dont think. I'm glad my partner simply blasted 7. Though the rest of you may think my bid would be easy over 5/NT.

Cherdano and I used to play transfers here, why did we stop doing so?

Did your transfers start at 4 or 4?

And was it only after a 3 overcall? I can see benefits to transfers over a 4 overcall too.

Our transfers started at 4C.

I believe we played transfers after all auctions where the opponents overcalled in a black suit after we opened in a black suit. We changed the rules several times.

I think the 3S overcall may be the single most important case to play transfers or switch the suits, even after 1H - 3S.
